This course encompasses everything from pre-production planning and scriptwriting to filming, editing, and post-production. Students learn to harness creativity, innovation, and collaboration, and gain practical skills in the many aspects involved in mounting a production, such as budgeting, location scouting, casting, production design, filming, and post-production.  Students learn TV Studio & Virtual Production and also undertake multiple practical film and documentary projects to put their skills into action.

This one-year full time QQI Level 5 course equips the learner with the vocational skills and knowledge to work in television studio production crew roles or in single camera crew roles in a managed environment in a range of television and film production contexts or to progress to further or higher education and training.

The course qualifies people to seek jobs in the TV/Film industry, either in production, editing or scriptwriting. Some graduates have opted for self-employment as freelance TV/Film Producers/Scriptwriters. Award holders may apply for a place on the Advanced Certificate in Media/Radio Level 6 course in LCFE MSC.

This is a one-year, full-time QQI Level 6 course designed to deepen learners' technical, analytical, and practical understanding of the moving image. The curriculum balances media theory with intensive, practice-based modules, enabling students to translate original creative concepts into fully realized screen productions. Throughout the year, learners explore contemporary media production across diverse industry formats, including short films, documentaries, and corporate or promotional videos. This comprehensive exposure provides deep insight into a rapidly evolving media landscape, helping students build a professional portfolio, develop advanced post-production skills, and gain the practical experience necessary to launch an industry career.

This course is designed to provide learners with an introduction to key skills required to work in the Film and TV sector and many other industries, where digital images/video can be used for promotional purposes.  Students will develop an understanding of scripting, storyboarding, capturing and editing video and post production using industry standard software and receive training in the use of the Adobe Creative Suite of software.  Students will also have the opportunity to use industry standard cameras, accessories, sound and lighting equipment.

The BA in Film and Theatre Making offers students a unique opportunity to study the intricacies of production practice in both film and theatre. Over the three years of the programme, students will learn the basics of directing and acting, along with technical and production elements for both stage and screen.

The Level 6 Film program is a creative immersion designed for students to express their unique vision through cinematic storytelling. The curriculum strikes a sophisticated balance between the artistic "visual language" of film and the rigorous technical demands of professional production. Students explore five core pillars: practical camera and lighting, film theory and analysis, art direction, production management, and advanced post-production. 

The Film & TV Production course is an exciting introduction to the production world of the Film & TV industry. A hands-on practical course, you will learn about many aspects of this industry, through practical projects that involve film production, shooting and editing film, scriptwriting, sound production, lighting and project management.

The college partners with VISUAL Carlow to engage you with professionals working in the industry, and to help you prepare work for public viewing. You will be able to build a portfolio of your own work to help support applications for further study and your career. This course can help you progress on to a wide range of Higher Education study options, with a really strong knowledge and skills base that will set up for success.

The Film Editing and Special Effects course will introduce you to the world of digital media creation with a strong focus on film editing and visual effects. This course is an ideal stepping-stone to courses in postproduction of Film and TV.

You can explore the creative potential of software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Photoshop, After-Effects, InDesign and Illustrator, and you will even get a license for your own home use of this software.

This course will equip you with practical skills in the creative design, production and editing of media. Not only will you achieve QQI certification, you can also gain Adobe Creative Associate awards to bolster your CV. Film Editing and Special Effects integrates TV and Film editing, Visual Effects, Sound Engineering and Design with the industry knowledge you need to take the next steps in your career.

Film Production offers a thorough study of film through both practical and academic avenues. Students will study key practical areas such as scriptwriting, directing, producing, sound, lighting and editing all of which will culminate in the creation of their own films. These areas are complemented by the study of film history, film theory and film industries.

This Film Studies degree is for people who want to think critically about film and write it – combining academic depth with practical creativity and opening a pathway to professional screenwriting.

English Literature

English Literature covers a broad range of literatures written in the English language, from Chaucer to the present day. The aim of the course is to help students acquire a thorough knowledge of the history of differing literatures while also enabling them to develop a sophisticated critical consciousness and an awareness of critical and cultural theory.

History

The History programme combines the strength of a broad-based programme in the first two years, introducing all students to the sheer diversity of historical studies, with the freedom to explore areas of particular interest to individual students in the final two years. The first and second years provide a range of modules covering medieval and modern periods, including Irish, European, and American history, as well as some modules exploring the skills and methods which historians use, and the kinds of debates in which historians engage. 

Film Studies

You will work in small groups to debate the topics that arise in lectures and to create short films and documentaries. Our students are active in many different societies, including DU Film Society and the student-run film magazine, Trinity Film Review.

Students combine this subject with their choice of French or Spanish.

Studying music will allow you to engage with a range of traditions to acquire a profound understanding of how music works in theory and in creative practice. You will be introduced to a range of skills such as, how to shoot short films using a HD video camera and edit them using Adobe Premiere Pro, how to take great digital photographs using a DSLR camera with a range of lenses and how to enhance them in Adobe Photoshop.

This programme will assist enthusiastic students in developing the essential practical skills and knowledge required to work in the dynamic area of film, television, and screen production. The programme is designed to follow the full-cycle of the film production process and has direct connections with the film industry. Students will gain skills in idea generation and development, writing for the screen and visual storytelling, financing projects, cinematography, directing, producing, sound recording, on and offline editing, VFX, and sales and distribution.

The programme is composed of 80% practical modules, with the remaining 20% of the modules being theoretically focused.
