Psychiatric/Mental Health nursing is a specialist field within the health care profession. It involves an interpersonal caring process which acknowledges the uniqueness of each person. The psychiatric nurse is concerned with the promotion of mental health, the prevention of mental illness and the provision of care to those with mental health problems.

The B.A. (Honours) in Psychology will help you explore how the brain works and help you make sense of the human impact on the world in which we live. You will explore the thoughts, feelings and actions of individuals and groups and understand how we think, behave and make decisions. This four-year honours degree in Psychology provides a broad introduction to the discipline, followed by coverage of the core areas of study required for accreditation by the Psychological Society of Ireland, as well as allowing you to specialise in advanced areas in your final year of study. You will also have an opportunity to undertake study abroad as well as work in an area relevant to psychology during your degree.

This interdisciplinary three year degree course in Psychology offers students the opportunity to follow a major course in psychology alongside minor study in an associate humanities discipline. Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes.

As such, the mission of the BA (Honours) in Psychology is to help students learn to think like psychologists. To achieve this goal, students generate and evaluate empirical evidence while considering theoretical perspectives of the discipline.

The BA (Hons) in Psychology is taught over 3 years full-time (or 4 years part-time). In the programme, learners engage with the core areas of psychology, including developmental, social, and cognitive psychology, abnormal psychology, psychotherapy, and neuropsychology.

A significant component of the programme is also dedicated to equipping learners with a strong capability in research methods, culminating in an independent research project.

The programme blends both the scientific subject of Psychology and application of Psychology. This advanced course explores social issues of marginalisation such as disability, mental health and addiction. You will gain an understanding of the government and charitable services in our communities and the psychological interventions that support wellbeing and rehabilitation.

The focus of this course is developing the student’s self-awareness and interpersonal skills as well as practical skills around working with social systems and team dynamics in community workspaces.

As part of our Psychology course, you will explore the theories and practices of psychology, learning about the methods used in psychological research, including techniques such as observation, case studies, psychometric tests, surveys and experiments. This course will enable you to progress to a wide range of Higher Education options, including degrees in Applied Psychology and will introduce you to the possibility of people-centred careers such as counselling, therapy, behavioural studies and business management amongst many options.

This full-time one-year course is suited to anyone interested in the area of Psychology. It will equip students with a good grounding in theories of behaviour and society which they can bring into further study in Arts or Psychology degrees. It is also a good introduction for anyone thinking of switching into this area.

Based in the university’s Mayo’s campus in Castlebar, this programme helps to address a pressing need for skilled psychologists in the region. Completion of a PSI accredited undergraduate degree is an important first step in any aspiring psychologist’s career. Students with a second-class honours from a PSI accredited degree are eligible to apply for postgraduate training in a range of specialisations in psychology.

This course will introduce you to psychological science and provide you with a broad understanding of the careers within the social and behavioural sciences. Over the year, you will learn how psychologists’ study, explain, and predict behaviour, and how abnormal thinking and behaving is classified and treated. Additionally, you will explore topics in social psychology, including the psychology of evil, attitudes and bias. You will learn how psychology is applied in settings such as mental health, school, and forensics. Other areas introduced include cognitive neuroscience, marketing, organisational and other community settings.

The degree covers all the major theories of psychology, as well as research methods and statistics for psychological data analysis. You will cover areas such as Brain and Behaviour, Social Psychology, Cognitive Psychology and Developmental Psychology.

Students will gain insight into many topics in Psychology including the biological basis of behaviour, the multiple layers of human development, and the different perspectives that underpin theories of human cognition, personality, and individual differences.
