Social care is a profession where people work with those who experience marginalisation or disadvantage or who have special needs. Social care practitioners work in a wide variety of settings with a wide variety of people: children and adolescents in residential care, people with learning or physical disabilities, the homeless, people with alcohol/ drug dependency, families in the community, older people or recent immigrants to Ireland. Social care practitioners typically work in a direct person-to-person capacity with service users. This programme is delivered through a blend of lectures, workshops and two full semesters of off-site, supervised practice placement.

This course is designed for people who want to attain the standards of proficiency for social care workers as defined by CORU. The learner will engage with 18 modules that explore social care practice and how it applies in various social care settings. Students will complete over 800 hours of supervised practice placement, in a social care setting.

Professional practice placement is integral to this programme, where students complete two 13-week blocks in professional social care practice settings.

This degree will give you a recognised professional qualification in social care and prepare for you for the challenging and rewarding role of being a social care worker. Our programme is a combination of academic study and assessed practice learning opportunities. This one-year Advanced Certificate (Level 6) is designed to deepen expertise in critical social care areas, including Mental Health and Disability Awareness. The program challenges students to critically evaluate contemporary trends and models of social care provision through a rigorous blend of academic and practical modules. Students explore the diverse roles of a Social Care Professional, focusing on specialized intervention strategies and the professional development necessary to support vulnerable populations effectively.

This course introduces learners to Social Studies and Social Care work. The course provides an academic foundation along with the practical experience necessary for working in the area of Social Care. It is also ideal for those who wish to continue their studies by progressing to Level 6 or higher at Third Level.

Two years, part-time for the full award. Students will receive a QQI component certificate at the end of the first year.

Studying on the Certificate in Social Citizenship at University College Cork offers students a stimulating environment to develop the skills they need to play an active role in shaping their own futures. The curriculum focuses on monetization and digital marketing across major platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, teaching students how to build a follower base, secure sponsorships, and produce high-quality short-form video content. Graduates are equipped to enter the workforce directly or progress to further studies, such as the Media Production HND at Coláiste Dhúlaigh or various university degrees via the CAO.
