Computing is the study of how computers and computer systems work and how they are constructed and programmed. As computing increasingly impacts on every aspect of our lives, it is also becoming a more evolved and complex area.

While computing may be of general interest to students, it’s often difficult to know which area of specialisation will be of most interest. This course has been designed to give students the broadest possible choice before choosing a specialisation.

This course will provide students with a solid grounding in the computing fundamentals but is flexible to allow students to shape their experience to focus on what interests them. This allows them entry into a widely varied industry with the specialised skills of their choosing, while also having a grasp of the basics across other computing areas.

Students will learn skills in coding skills from application and web development to front and backend development, problem solving and critical thinking, and communication and collaboration skills.

Our Bachelor of Science in Computing provides you with a range of both theoretical and practical skills to advance in the computer industry. The ethos of this three-year course is to provide you with a strong core set of competencies in general computing - the kind of skills that are typically required across all aspects of the industry.  

This degree includes lots of time spent in computer labs creating programs and solving problems. The aim is to teach students how to use industry standard tools and techniques and then explain the concepts behind them. Creativity, problem solving, persistence and critical thinking are key skills which are developed during the degree. New high-tech computer teaching labs will open at ATU Sligo in 2023 and give students access to the latest advancements in technology.

The BSc in Computing is a three year programme where students begin in this shared first year alongside all other computing students across our programmes. The aim is to teach students how to use industry standard tools and techniques and then explain the concepts behind them. Creativity, problem solving, persistence and critical thinking are key skills which are developed during the course. At the end of Year 1, we counsel students on their next step, offering the following programmes to join: Computing, Software Development, and Games Development.

After Year 3, students may choose to continue their study in that computer programme to acquire a Level 8 honours degree (all but Games Development offer a Level 8 degree).

Data Science, also known as Big Data Analytics is the process of examining large amounts of data of a variety of types (big data) to uncover hidden patterns, unknown correlations and other useful information. Such information can provide competitive advantages over rival organizations and result in business benefits, such as more effective marketing and increased revenue. Data Science has in turn been the big enabler for the expansion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a truly mass-market technology. AI relies on the patterns found in data to make decisions.  

This program at Dublin College Blackrock (formerly BFEI) is a practical, one-year course designed to bridge the gap between traditional administrative roles and the modern digital workplace. Located in Blackrock village, this course focuses on equipping students with the essential IT and organizational skills required for both on-site and remote work environments. Students receive comprehensive training in the Microsoft 365 suite, mastering file sharing, remote collaboration, and industry-standard applications. By blending core business administration with advanced digital proficiency, the program ensures graduates can confidently navigate contemporary office technologies and effectively manage digital workflows.

You will develop skills in a variety of software tool-kits and applications through hands-on practical development work, and the production of rich media and web application content for a wide range of platforms. A degree in Computer and Information Technology gives you a grounding in a broad range of information technology subjects as well as the skills to manage and administrate complex digital infrastructure.

The course develops applied computing, interpersonal, communication and IT skills and readies graduates to develop, select, deliver, manage and maintain cutting-edge IT infrastructures and advanced IT systems. It is ideal for students who are interested in IT and are keen to learn programming, web development, database design and human-computer interaction, it also requires team working skills and nuanced interpersonal interaction.

The overall aim of this programme is to provide its learners with the necessary theoretical and practical skills, knowledge and competence, to gain a comprehensive, specialised and in-depth, understanding of the area in Information Technology. 

During this course, you’ll learn coding and programming, and get to grips with databases, operating systems and networks. But you’ll also study innovation and entrepreneurship, project management and presentation skills. In your last year, you can even develop your own app, and build both a prototype and a rock-solid business plan.

This field covers a range of industries, including games development, application development, multimedia entertainment, simulation and virtual reality creation, animation, and filmmaking.

This course provides a solid foundation in software development for web and mobile systems, and how to test and implement it into group projects. Critical thinking and communication skills are taught to provide students with the core soft skills required to work as part of a modern software engineering team. Students will specialise in the design, development, testing and evaluation of software systems with particular emphasis on the application of agile process development.

The course places a major emphasis on the development of practical programming language skills, problem solving and the application of computer science theory to real-world problems. Designed specifically with industry needs in mind, this BSc (Hons) in Computing Science is a 4-year programme that aims to equip students with a thorough understanding of the key principles of computer science.

Students will have the opportunity to work on software development projects, which have a strong industry focus. The projects will help support the theoretical content taught in class. In Year 3, you’ll undertake a 6-month work placement in the computing industry. In Year 4, you will choose a speciality: Cloud Computing, Network Management, Games Development or Software Development.
