French at Queen’s reflects the dynamism and cultural diversity of the French-speaking world, focusing on the language, culture and society of metropolitan France, and opening up perspectives on a range of global cultures. All students spend a period of residence in a Francophone country. Students can begin their studies in French as a beginner.

The undergraduate History programme offers students a wide choice, including ancient, medieval, early modern and modern history; students can explore aspects of gender, social and cultural history, colonial history, politics, religious and economic change.

Students studying French and International Relations appreciate how the insights of political analysis (e.g. political theory, political institutions, international relations) and the tools of literary and linguistic inquiry combine to illuminate political and historical developments, including those in the contemporary world.

The degree takes four years to complete; in the third year students have a period of residence in a Francophone country.

The emphasis in both French and Irish is on modern language and culture, and issues of language and identity will be at the core of the joint programme.

In French, the course offers insight into the language and society of both metropolitan France and a range of Francophone cultures throughout the world. Students can begin their studies in French as a beginner. In Irish, you will develop a broad understanding of diverse aspects of Irish culture and society, including cinema, the short story, the novel and modern poetry.

Students can explore a variety of contemporary issues, historical periods and geographical areas through a range of media, including art, cinema, linguistics and literature.

Politics is concerned with the sources of conflict, co-operation, power and decision-making within and between societies, how differences are expressed through ideology and organisation, and how, if at all, disagreements and problems are resolved.

The emphasis in the BA in French and Portuguese is on linguistic proficiency and inter-cultural awareness; language and identity are at the core of the programme. You will be critically reflecting on a variety of contemporary issues, historical periods and geographical areas (France and Portugal, but also for example, Brazil, French- and Portuguese-speaking Africa, and the Francophone Caribbean), explored through a range of media including art, cinema, linguistics and literature.

The degree includes residency (c.8 months) in a Francophone and/or Lusophone country.

The emphasis in the BA in French and Spanish is on linguistic proficiency and inter-cultural awareness; language and identity are central to the programme. You will be critically reflecting on a variety of contemporary issues, historical periods and geographical areas (France and Spain, but also for example Latin America, Francophone Africa and the Francophone Caribbean), explored through a range of media including art, cinema, linguistics and literature.

Within the Modern Languages programme you study two modern European languages to degree level.  You can choose between French, German, Irish, Italian, Russian and Spanish. Apart from French and Irish all languages can be studied from both advanced and beginners level.

French studies develop transferable skills (excellent writing and oral communication abilities, critical thinking, extensive analytical skills) that are highly sought after across a range of sectors (the creative industries, public service, tourism, publishing, interpreting, teaching, journalism, broadcasting, the Diplomatic Service, etc.). The study of French language, literature, history, politics and philosophy is a hugely enriching intellectual experience and it also leaves graduates very well placed to succeed in a wide range of professional contexts.

The programme is designed to support students to progress or return to further education or employment following a period out of work. The students explore a mix of social skills, personal and vocational skill development to allow them to make realistic and informed decisions based on their own strengths and personal goals.

Explore how the core elements of user experience (UX) design can be used to create more effective, engaging and enjoyable digital media interactions.

UX design uses research, design skills and usability testing to enhance the ways in which a user can interact with a digital product. It involves a range of techniques, including user research, requirements analysis, user interface and interaction design, prototyping, and user testing. The demand from industry in Ireland for people with these skills has significantly grown in response to the increasing prominence and importance of the field. This course produces skilled, confident and knowledgeable user experience designers to fill this gap.

The course has a strong emphasis on process and design, essential disciplines for the generation of design ideas and the production of finished pieces of furniture.

You will have the opportunity to develop a unique range of skills thanks to classes in 2D CAD (Computer Aided Draughting), ceramics and printmaking.

The aim of this course is to provide students with the essential skills and capabilities to design, plan and manufacture quality furniture. The course is strongly vocational as students’ time is spent between the fully equipped workshop and the drawing and design room. Students learn a variety of traditional and modern woodworking processes using the finest quality hardwoods, plastics, metals and other composite materials. As part of the course, students manufacture several articles of furniture which they have custom designed in their own style.
