Social care practitioners work in a wide variety of settings with a wide variety of people: children and adolescents in residential care, people with learning or physical disabilities, the homeless, people with alcohol/ drug dependency, families in the community, older people or recent immigrants to Ireland. Social care is a profession where people work with those who experience marginalisation or disadvantage or who have special needs. Social care practitioners work in a wide variety of settings with a wide variety of people: children and adolescents in residential care, people with learning or physical disabilities, the homeless, people with alcohol/ drug dependency, families in the community, older people or recent immigrants to Ireland. Social care practitioners typically work in a direct person-to-person capacity with service users. This programme is delivered through a blend of lectures, workshops and two full semesters of off-site, supervised practice placement.

This is a one year full-time course leading to a QQI level 5 award. The aim of this programme is to enable the learner to develop the knowledge, skills and competence to work under supervision in a range of community health service settings or to progress to further and/or higher education and training.

This course is designed for people who want to attain the standards of proficiency for social care workers as defined by CORU. The learner will engage with 18 modules that explore social care practice and how it applies in various social care settings. Students will complete over 800 hours of supervised practice placement, in a social care setting.

Students explore the diverse roles of a Social Care Professional, focusing on specialized intervention strategies and the professional development necessary to support vulnerable populations effectively.

Studying on the Certificate in Social Citizenship at University College Cork offers students a stimulating environment to develop the skills they need to play an active role in shaping their own futures. The course provides the opportunity for students to develop their personal educational interests and to interact with a wide range of students from different courses within UCC. It will be underpinned by very practical applications including Marketing and Public Relations. Students will study up to date content in topical areas such as marketing research, marketing planning, promotional methods, social media marketing, search engine optimization, digital advertising, and effective public relations. Students will be eligible to apply for progression through the CAO to various Business and Marketing courses including TU Dublin, IADT and NU Maynooth.

The curriculum focuses on monetization and digital marketing across major platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, teaching students how to build a follower base, secure sponsorships, and produce high-quality short-form video content. Graduates are equipped to enter the workforce directly or progress to further studies, such as the Media Production HND at Coláiste Dhúlaigh or various university degrees via the CAO.
