This programme is based on the core scientific disciplines of sport and exercise science - physiology and biomechanics. Students will learn to understand how to achieve maximum performance for the high performing athlete, and those who are looking to support exercise and physical activity for the health of the wider population, of all ages and capabilities. 

This programme is the first of its kind in Ireland, a three-year honours degree at Level 8 that combines sports-related modules with sound business practice. The programme focuses on introducing students to business and enterprise skills with opportunities for specific skill development in coaching, fitness instruction, personal training, education, exercise prescription and health. This programme prepares students for a wide range of career opportunities ranging from sports development, health promotion, marketing and management to teaching, coaching and becoming an entrepreneur.

The coaching modules are tailored to elevate your understanding of the sport, covering strategy, skill development and effective coaching techniques. The exercise & fitness module focuses on deigning fitness programmes and exercise instruction, while nutrition provides insights into dietary requirements focusing on sports and fitness. This course gives students a unique opportunity to develop leadership and entrepreneurial skills within the context of sport. Additionally, you can attain internationally recognised professional qualifications as an exercise professional and a wide range of coaching qualifications in sports such as GAA, FAI, Athletics, Kayaking, Mountain Biking and Disability Inclusion Training.

This course is suitable for you if you have a strong interest in sport and exercise science and wish to pursue a career in high performance sport, a clinical profession (e.g. physiotherapy, dietetics, medicine) and/or scientific research in sport and health sciences. You will study the scientific principles underlying the promotion and enhancement of sport, physical health and exercise across the lifespan.

This course offers a broad introduction to Sport, Exercise and Recreation studies, providing students with the necessary skills to take up employment at entry level in the leisure industry. Students will improve their knowledge, competence and understanding of physical fitness and sport both practically and theoretically.

The course is a mix of business, sports and leisure theory and applied modules providing you when you graduate with a wide range of competencies and attributes that you will find valuable working within the Sports, Leisure and associated sectors.

You will study topics such as Communication, Marketing, Intercultural Competence, Leadership in Health Activity and Nutrition, Entrepreneurship, Leisure Law, and Facilities Management. Graduates will build the attributes and competencies required to work in the field. 

Our Bachelor of Science in Sports & Exercise with degree award options: Performance or Physical Education, is a four year programme that combines your passion for sports with a successful career progress through the course. Studying sport or exercise at third level is an opportunity to harness your passion and combine it with the knowledge to build a wonderful career in either sports performance or physical education studies. The first two years provide the core foundation of the degree, while the last two years allow you to specialise.
