Environmental engineering is that branch of engineering concerned with the application of scientific and engineering principles for the protection and improvement of the environmental quality of the world in which we live.

Environmental engineers work on issues of sustainability, provide safe and secure drinking water, collect, treat and properly dispose of wastewater and other wastes, design flood protection measures, maintain or improve air and noise quality, design sustainable urban drainage systems, clean up contaminated land and groundwater, and help communities and industry minimise pollution, among many other activities.

In this course, you’ll study issues such as food safety, environmental pollution, occupational safety and health risk management, and how these should be managed.

This BSc (Hons) Environmental Health programme has great strength in delivering the practical and academic skills required for a career in environmental health including problem solving, communication, research and management skills. It also aims to facilitate the development of your own personal, communication and intellectual abilities.

The course includes the core subjects of food safety management, health and safety at work, environmental protection, housing and public health. The areas of sustainability, quality of life, health inequalities, law and spatial planning are also integrated throughout the programme.

Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary study which examines the interaction between humans and the environment, with specific reference to the effects of modern technological advances.

The degree programme is four years in duration. Early modules are concerned with building up your understanding of science relevant to the environment (biology, ecology, chemistry, computing, mathematics and physics). The basic concepts used in these subjects are applied to specific environmental science applications. Later modules in the programme focus on the areas of environmental management, environmental technology, environmental impact assessment, waste management, sustainability and conservation ecology, environmental monitoring and health & safety.

This full-time one-year programme will be of interest to those wishing to work or pursue further study in Environmental Science. Career areas include waste management, renewable energy, nature conservation, and numerous areas within the environmental sector. The core science modules open up many routes for further study in general science areas as well as other sustainable areas.

This course has been designed to meet the needs of a variety of students wishing to study Environmental Science, specifically those who did not satisfy the entry requirements for direct entry to a degree course, and adult returnees to education.

Environmental Science and Engineering is a new integrated undergraduate with postgraduate degree course that aims to train the next generation of graduates who have the competencies, knowledge and experience necessary to design and deploy solutions that protect and improve our environment and human wellbeing, and that work with rather than against the natural world to foster biodiversity, climate action and sustainable use of Earth’s finite resources.

This honours degree offers a unique combination of scientific and instrumentation based modules to train graduates in the skills required to become environmental monitoring specialists, specifically in the areas of air and water quality analysis.

Whether out on field trips or doing nanoscale environmental analysis in the lab, you’ll gain the analytical and practical skills to understand, protect and improve our environment. Not only that, but you’ll get to contribute in a practical way to reducing carbon on- and off-campus in our new module, Towards Zero Carbon.

Over the four years, you’ll gain a strong scientific core in biology, chemistry, physics and maths. This is vital to working as an environmental scientist, but also gives you flexibility when it comes to your career choice. In your third year, you’ll do a nine-month work placement and you also have the chance to study abroad. And of course, throughout the course, you’ll be able to contribute practically to reducing carbon reliance.

As the world is ever more focused on protecting the environment and cutting carbon emissions, there is ongoing and increasing demand for qualified scientists. Graduates from this course typically go on to high-impact careers as research scientists in areas such as environmental protection, and water, air and soil management and conservation.

This honours degree equips graduates with the skills to manage our manmade and natural resources. Through a mix of outdoor fieldwork, high-tech laboratory practicals, computer mapping, site visits and classroom learning and activities, students gain a range of skills to thrive in this increasingly important industry. Assessments are planned to develop skills that employers value highly. This includes scientific report writing, presentations, group work and practical skills. Students have the option to study abroad with our partner university in Sweden. There is also an option to take part in a two-week international summer school in the Netherlands or Sweden.

Environmental Studies with Business combines the study of sustainability and environmental issues with business areas such as accounting and applied economics. Businesses are now addressing environmental issues that are impacting our planet so now is a great opportunity to respond positively and link environmental change to the business sector. Successful graduates have the opportunity to progress to BSc in Sustainability in UCD (DN240) and a wide range of business degrees.

The overall aim of the programme is to equip you with degree-level competence in the disciplines of Equine Science and a choice of professional studies in either Equitation* (the art or practice of horse riding or horsemanship) or Equine Business Management. Graduates of the programme contribute to the continued development of the horse industry through the application of their knowledge, skills and research in Science, Equitation and Business Management.
