The programme is designed to provide students with an intellectual training in the disciplines of Philosophy and Anthropology which, while discrete subjects, are complementary and mutually enriching.  The combination of Philosophy and Anthropology allows for the development of an in-depth appreciation of the ideas that help to explain the foundations of the current world, human behaviour, and thinking across and beyond cultural difference.

The Joint Honours Programme in Anthropology and Politics provides students with an in-depth, interdisciplinary understanding of contemporary cultures and politics, international affairs, societies, and institutions in their political, historical, social, cultural, economic and legal dimensions.

This degree programme provides students with an education in two key closely related disciplines, anthropology and sociology. Social anthropology is the study of the social life of humankind and how this varies across different human cultures and societies past and present. Sociology developed as the scientific study of human society with a focus on social structure, social reproduction and social change and on how groups and individuals are influenced by norms, roles, and institutions.

Students studying Anthropology and Spanish gain an understanding of socio-cultural differences and similarities and how they arise, are transmitted and develop. You acquire knowledge and understanding of the inter-relationship between texts and contexts, a familiarity with debates surrounding culture and identity, both individual and communal, and skills in synthesising and developing ideas and arguments from diverse literary and other contemporary sources.

This course is grounded in the principles of empowerment, human rights, inclusion and social justice. Graduates of this course will be furnished with the requisite knowledge and skills to work in and meaningfully engage communities affected by addiction, to support voluntary activity and to progress community projects.
