The undergraduate music degree programme at the School of Arts and Humanities at Ulster University is based around four core elements: Performance, Composition, Musicology and Music Technology.

Year 1 is designed to provide students with a comprehensive overview of musical styles, genres and disciplines enabling them to develop existing skills and interests as well as acquire a range of new ones. Note: All year 1 modules are compulsory for BMus students.

Year 2 allows students the opportunity to begin specialising by introducing a number of optional modules as well as level 2 modules in the four core disciplines.

Year 3 enables students to focus their degree programme in one or more related areas of specialist interest with a broad range of advanced level modules. Placement presents students the opportunity to take part in an internship with a local music or arts organisation while the Project options allow students to pursue an independent course of research or practical work in a chosen field of musical study.

The BMus in Music is designed for students who wish to develop a deep understanding of music in the broadest sense whilst honing their specialist skills to professional standards. The degree includes studies in musicianship, harmony, music history and a range of associated skills that provide a well-rounded set of transferable skills such as problem-solving, communication and teamwork. This ensures that graduates in music are equally employable in graduate jobs as they are in musical careers.

Restricted course. Music Performance Studies are a central part of the course. In year 3 and 4 you specialise in one of Performance Studies, Music in the Community, Pedagogic [Music Teaching] Studies, Music Technology, Music Therapy, it is equally possible to specialise in Applied Musicianship Skills and/or Music History.

Foundation level maths at HB2 acceptable.

This one-year full time course in Advanced Music Studies is designed to provide the learner with the vocational skills and knowledge of music theory, performance, and recording and aims to give participants an introduction to the core concepts, principles and systems pertinent to practitioners in the performing arts. The programme will provide learners with the opportunity to develop a broad range of conceptual, practical and factual knowledge relevant to key areas of performance. In addition the course will offer the learner the opportunity of developing a range of knowledge and skills across a broad spectrum of the performing arts industry.

This course will enable you to develop your creativity and musicianship through classes in composition, performance, and theory. You will enrich your knowledge of the role that music has played in the past, and continues to play in societies around the world, through classes in history and culture. You will dive deeper into your own musical interests – whether as a composer, performer, or thinker – through research. You will find out and experience why music is so foundational to contemporary life.

Studying music will allow you to engage with a range of traditions to acquire a profound understanding of how music works in theory and in creative practice. If you are interested in understanding music’s place in society, developing music technology skills, writing music, or improving your skills as an informed performer, this course could be for you.

Drama Studies  (Restricted)

The degree explores the relationship between the theory and practice of Drama and Theatre to discover how and why they work. The strong developmental emphasis of the courses requires a particular blend of practical and academic skills. 

This BIMM Music Institute Dublin Diploma will serve as a fundamental introduction to Music and Audio Production, providing students with the core knowledge, technical and creative skills required for a range of creative industries.

Having completed the course, students will be equipped for entry-level employment in areas as diverse as music production, audio engineering, audio for games, broadcast, post-production, corporate audio, pro-audio sales and audio system installation.

The Music and Audio Production programme is designed for musicians from a wide range of musical backgrounds interested in the production of musical content in both the recording studio and live performance environments. Students will gain practical knowledge and experience of recording, editing, mixing and mastering music using professional studio facilities.

This course provides students with an innovative degree path for entry to the teaching profession, as well as established music professions (including teaching, tutoring, recording and composing), whilst also developing the skills and technological acumen essential to pursuing emergent career opportunities in a variety of industries where creative and mathematical skills are advantageous.

The BA (Hons) in Music and Performance Technologies aims to provide musicians with a broad range of musical experience and knowledge necessary to succeed in the contemporary music industry, in Ireland and beyond.

These include both musical skills (including performance, theory, history, composition, and improvisation) and the technological and business skills necessary for 21st century musicians (such as music production, digital collaboration, creative coding, and entrepreneurship).

The BA in Music and Performance Technologies aims to provide musicians with a broad range of musical experience and knowledge necessary to succeed in the contemporary music industry, in Ireland and beyond. The Music and Sound Design programme is designed for musicians interested in composing music and designing sound for a wide range of contexts but with particular emphasis on film and theatre. Students will gain practical knowledge and experience of composing in the studio, composing for instrumental forces, song-writing and scoring for picture. Working alongside leading audio professionals students will also learn innovative methods of capturing, synthesising and manipulating sound, enabling the design of sonic environments to accompany picture, stage productions, radio and gaming.

TUS Athlone Campus exclusively offers an industry focused program that features Sound Engineering, Instrument Technology, Imaging and Professional Development to create the unique Bachelor of Science in Music and Sound Engineering, Level 7 (MASE). You will be involved in a wide range of industry specific assignments and practical work which encompasses all aspects of sound engineering, instrument craft & design and other creative studies that are all necessities for the creative industry

This course allows students to develop a broad range of knowledge and skills in audio and music technology, sound engineering and production and musicianship. Students will gain hands-on experience in studio work (audio tracking, audio mixing), composition with technology and radio production in our high-spec studios and multimedia editing suites. A series of events throughout the academic year will allow students to gain experience in studio production, live sound, composition with technology, radio programme production and musicianship whilst developing the necessary skills required to navigate the technical music and sound industry. As part of the course, students will be developing competence in industry software such as AVID Pro Tools, Reason, Adobe Audition, Sibelius, Ableton and other software.

This course is designed to provide a combination of practical and theoretical tuition in all aspects of digital sound engineering and event production. Students will work in a fully equipped digital studio and be involved in the production of live performance recording.It aims for students to gain a broad appreciation of the technology,every year more hardware and software becomes available to create music and teach students about music. It’s a hands-on, skills-based course which equips students with a fundamental knowledge of the common applications of music technology.

The BIMM Institute Dublin Diploma in Music Business is designed to provide students with a skillset specifically aimed at future employment in fields as diverse as Music Promotion and Marketing, Artist Management, Tour Management, Physical and Digital Music Distribution, e-commerce in the Music Industry, Music Publishing and Recording, Live Music Events and Touring and PROs.

An extensive range of tutorials, Masterclasses and industry workshops will complement the curriculum. This ensures that students are fully supported and connected to the existing BIMM community of artists and performers. You’ll also be exposed to a wider network of industry opportunities.

In designing this programme, the Academy has focused on training composers in the areas of acoustic and electro-acoustic music, in addition to theoretical support subjects such as harmony and counterpoint, analysis, history and aural awareness. Students can specialise in their area of interest from year three onwards. In addition to these elements, the programme places a strong emphasis on performance, particularly in guaranteeing our composition students frequent performances and recordings of their works played by their fellow students and by professional musicians.
