Participants will build on their existing knowledge of software development. The main programming languages taught are Java and Visual Basic (VB). On this course, Java is used mainly to build mobile apps for the Android platform whereas Visual Basic is used to teach Graphical User Interface (GUI) programming. There is a strong emphasis on experiential learning with students learning by doing (rather than by observing).

Software Design for Mobile Apps and Connected Devices is a course that teaches students how to design and develop software applications for mobile devices, such as smartphones, tablets, wearables, and IoT devices. The course covers topics such as user interface design, data management, networking, security, testing, and deployment. Students will learn how to use various tools and frameworks to create software solutions that are responsive, reliable, and user-friendly.

The BSc in Software Development is a three- year Level 7 degree programme designed to provide students with the theoretical and practical skills necessary to gain employment in the software development industry. The overall aim of the programme is to provide the learner with the opportunity to enable the learner to design, develop and test software components and systems in a workplace environment, working as a team member under supervision, while contributing to the workflow for the finished product. There are 35 programme modules in this programme. Upon successful completion of a minimum of 8 programme modules the learner may achieve the required 120 credits for a level 5 QQI major award. There are many employment options after this course in the IT industry ranging from working in the area of Web Design creation to programming in the larger IT companies.
