This course is designed for students from overseas who wish to improve their knowledge of English and acquire Business and IT Skills. Students get the opportunity to participate in the diverse and vibrant learning environment of Rathmines College.

This course provides intensive English language training at intermediate level. Each student benefits from seven hours per week of English tuition.

Students undertaking English and Film Studies explore literature, language and cinema in the widest possible sense. From the earliest writings in Anglo-Saxon to contemporary Irish, British, and ‘global’ literatures; from the origins of European cinema, via the French New Wave, to contemporary Hollywood and World Cinema, students study English and Film in their historical, cultural ideological circumstances and material manifestations. And modules on adaptation, visual culture and scriptwriting in both English and Film evidence the cross-pollination of these important cultural forms.

Students undertaking English and French explore Anglo- and Francophone literatures and language in the widest possible sense. From the earliest writings in Anglo-Saxon to contemporary Irish, British, French and postcolonial literatures, students study English and French texts in their historical, cultural and ideological circumstances and material manifestations.

Language modules in English and French explore language structure and function; the day-to-day use of the languages, including in the media; and the major influences that have shaped both linguistic traditions.

Students undertaking English and History explore literature, language and history in the widest possible sense. From the earliest writings in Anglo-Saxon to contemporary Irish, British, and ‘global’ literatures; from the origins of ancient Greece and Rome to modern Irish, European, American and Chinese history, students study English in its linguistic, historical and ideological circumstances and in History can choose modules that focus on gender, social and cultural history, colonial history, politics, religious and economic change.

The B.A. (Honours) in English and History is a 4 Year Level 8 Programme. It offers students the opportunity to read the greatest works of literature in English alongside the most important and influential events in Irish, European and world history.

Students on this programme develop a deep knowledge of literature in English and history, and more generally, advanced understandings of human society and culture at the local, regional and global level.

The structure of the programme gives students a solid foundation in both English literature and History in Years 1 and 2, before allowing them to specialise in either English or History, or to keep a balance between the subjects in Years 3 and 4.

The programme equips students with the essential tools needed for the 21st century by nourishing critical thinking, developing communication skills and fostering creativity. It also prepares graduates for life after college by teaching them employability skills through special career skills and career practice modules.

Students undertaking English and Irish explore the literatures and languages of both traditions in the widest possible sense. From the earliest writings in Anglo-Saxon to contemporary Anglo-Irish, British, and ‘global’ literatures, students study English in its historical, linguistic, cultural, material and ideological circumstances. The Irish language forms an integral part of Irish cultural life as a medium for education, music, literature, drama and television. Spoken for over 2,000 years, Irish boasts a vast early literature of world significance.

Students in this course will analyse literature including poetry, drama, and fiction, alongside multiple forms of visual and popular culture. By doing so, they will engage with historical and contemporary traditions of writing, media, and critical thought.

From the earliest writings in Anglo-Saxon to contemporary Irish, British, and ‘global’ literatures, students study English in its historical, linguistic, cultural, material and ideological circumstances.

In Philosophy students can study some of the key thinkers in the history of philosophy, from Plato and Aristotle to Descartes and Marx. Students also hone their skills in reasoning and argumentation by studying formal logic and critical thinking.

Students undertaking English and Politics explore literatures in English in the widest possible sense. From the earliest writings in Anglo-Saxon to contemporary Irish, British, and ‘global’ literatures, students study English in its historical, cultural and ideological circumstances and material manifestations.

In Politics, students assess the sources of conflict, co-operation, power and decision-making within and between societies, how differences are expressed through ideology and organisation, and how, if at all, disagreements and problems are resolved.

The BA (Hons) English and Psychology degree at ATU Sligo enables students to think critically and acquire a deep understanding of the human condition and human behaviour through the study of English and Psychology. Students undertaking English and Spanish at Queen’s explore the literatures and languages of both traditions in the widest possible sense. From the earliest writings in Anglo-Saxon to contemporary Irish, British, and ‘global’ literatures, students study English in its historical, linguistic, cultural and ideological circumstances and material manifestations. As the world’s second most widely spoken language, Spanish is a vibrant and growing subject and a doorway into a variety of rich and fascinating cultures across world.

The program is specifically structured to accommodate varying levels of English proficiency, uniquely integrating core language acquisition with practical studies in business and computer literacy. The curriculum focuses on expanding linguistic range and accuracy, enabling participants to interact effectively in standard social, cultural, and workplace environments.

The course will equip learners with the essential language and technical skills needed to succeed in today’s job market. In an increasingly digital world, effective communication and IT proficiency is vital for success.

Throughout this course learners will enhance their English language abilities and develop IT competencies, including digital literacy, software applications, selling practices and online collaboration skills required to transition to their future career.

The BA in English Language and Literature aims to foster critically aware and digitally-skilled graduates who are highly adept at creating and interpreting texts and content. The programme will enhance literary and professional knowledge of English by focusing on the core features of language and linguistics, as well as the core literary texts, genres and theories.

Graduates will have expertise spanning the language system (vocabulary, grammar, phonology and discourse), digital analysis and content creation tools, as well as a thorough understanding of English literature across a range of eras, literary and cultural theories and genres.

This course is intended for students whose first language is not English. It provides a full award at QQI level 5 in Business Studies. It is expected that students will have a B1 level on the CEF scale (Common European Framework) when joining this course. Students will have the opportunity to attend 10 hours of intensive English language classes which will be accredited at QQI level 5 as well as being prepared for examination in IELTS (International English Language Testing System.This course is designed to give students an in-depth knowledge of concepts relevant to the business world with an emphasis on accounting, administration, marketing and computing.
