This two-year Level 8 honours degree, awarded by the University of Dundee, is a top-up program designed to integrate advanced technical, creative, and academic skills. Operating in a high-spec studio environment equipped with Unreal Engine, Unity, Maya, and a dedicated XR mo-cap lab, students engage in self-directed learning focused on iterative prototyping and asset creation. The program culminates in a collaborative final-year major project where students produce a fully functioning game, showcased through live play and promotional trailers at the annual BCFE Graduate Showcase.

The aim of this course is to provide students with an excellent foundation in computer games design. Students will gain the necessary knowledge and skills that are fundamental to the craft of games design and production. All aspects of games development from concept to storyboard creation and design through to the development of functioning 2D and 3D games are covered.

The QQI Level 5 Games Design and Development program at Dublin College Blackrock (formerly BFEI) is a one-year immersion into the multifaceted world of gaming. This course is specifically designed to bridge the gap between creative artistry and technical engineering. Students learn to conceptualize and build games from the ground up by fusing traditional art skills—such as storyboarding and character development—with high-tech computing disciplines like 3D modeling, C# programming (Unity), and graphic design. The Games Development course is designed to encourage the development of key games development skills especially in the areas of games software programming, design, graphics and project management. Learners will learn how to use and implement popular game engines like Unity 3D in the creation of their own games software titles while studying core development languages. Additionally, learners will create graphics, animations, sound and look at their implementation possibilities for modern technologies such as the web, mobile devices and gaming consoles. Learners will get hands on experience of exciting technologies such as motion capture, AR and VR.

Successful learners will have an extensive knowledge of games software development as well as an extensive portfolio of work including individual games.

This degree uses a software engineering approach to games development, combining study of the technical aspects of games programming, including virtual reality, augmented reality and artificial intelligence, with the principles of project management, quality assurance and organisational management.  While focused on developing games software, we also provide a general grounding in software engineering to equip students with the breadth of skills to work in any aspect of the information technology industry.

The course is designed to reinforce and enhance the student’s knowledge of scientific principles, processes and technologies through the study of food. will focus on a new food product development, entrepreneurship, and introduction to sensory and consumer science. The final years of study will focus on the acquisition of scientific skills in food science, sensory and flavor science.
