French at UCC will not only expand your knowledge and use of the language, it will introduce you to modern French culture and the cultures of French-speaking countries worldwide.

Along with translation, philosophy, visual culture and linguistics, you will study a wide range of topics, including history, literature, music, theatre, politics and the connections France has to other countries.

French Studies can be taken as part of the MIC Arts Degree as a joint honours combination. You will learn about French society, literature and culture as well as improving your language skills. You will use a wide range of materials to aid your study, including textbooks, newspapers, film, radio, TV and internet.

As well as acquiring the oral and written skills essential to any language degree, students who choose Gaeilge/Irish as part of their Arts programme will enjoy unique cultural enrichment. You will develop informed opinions on Irish life and civilisation through an acquaintance with the various sources of information on our heritage and a familiarity with Irish literature from early times to the present.

The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) makes available to you a wide range of Humanities and Social Science subjects in a course that is comparable to Arts degrees nationally and worldwide.

Students of the course are encouraged to see the world anew through the study of subjects such as English Literature, Sociology, Irish and other Modern European Languages, Religious Studies, Psychology and others and, over a three year period, not only to develop expertise in two subjects areas but to develop a questioning and creative approach to the modern world.

Geography involves the study of subjects such as the impact of societies on the quality of the environment; geographical approaches to the study of world population; the relationship between culture, landscape transformation and politics. No prior knowledge of geography is assumed.

As part of an Arts degree, this subject is taken with two other subjects in your first year. You continue to study two of your first year subjects in second and third years. It may also be possible to specialize in one subject after first year.

Geography at UL consists of modules in both human and physical geography. Studying geography will equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge to tackle and plan for the future needs of society. Through lectures, tutorials, lab work and field trips, you will be equipped to identify, analyse and explain complex human and natural phenomena in a succinct and clear manner. You will learn to work as members of a team, as well as working independently, all the while developing your critical thinking skills. 

As a student of geography, you will learn to view the world using this geographical lens. Geographers examine geographical processes in a variety of thematic areas within geography including landscape, heritage, migration, culture, food, tourism, environment, economy, cities, climate, geomorphology, and development

Geography is concerned with both the natural and the cultural environments created on the earth’s surface and with the inter-relationships between them. It has links with a wide range of other disciplines, and is a subject with enormous contemporary relevance in a world facing challenges such as globalisation, inequality, natural resource depletion, environmental degradation, climate change, and large-scale international migration and refugee flows. As it is inherently interdisciplinary, Geography helps to develop a wide range of talents.

As a student of German, you will have a twin focus on language and culture. Through language classes and with supporting material such as film, television and outings to cultural events, you will aim to become a fluent speaker and writer of German. If you’re a beginner, you can take intensive language classes.

All students of German have the opportunity to spend the third year of their undergraduate studies living in a German-speaking country and to graduate with a BA International.

This course emphasises competent use of language, grammatical accuracy and systematic vocabulary building along with an improvement of German cultural awareness.

As part of an Arts degree, this subject is one of three subjects you choose in first year. In second and third year you continue with two of the subjects taken in First Arts. Third Year is spent on an Erasmus study year abroad in a partner university.

You will learn about culture and society (literature, cinema, Landeskunde (area studies), history, popular culture, current affairs, language in society etc.) in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Frequently, award-winning authors and other eminent speakers from these countries visit us and our students get the opportunity to interact with them directly. You will also, of course, be developing your language awareness and your German language skills by working with exciting and topical texts, visual material and online digital resources, and, at an advanced stage, developing your translation and interpreting skills. From the beginning, you will be actively involved in the classes and will find yourself doing research on new topics, often with your fellow students for group presentations, video projects, podcasts and essays.

The BA (Hons) in German is a three-year degree course focusing on aspects of German literature, history, business, philosophy, theatre and film. German as a joint honours subject can also be combined with Music and with Drama and Theatre Studies.

German Studies at MIC not only includes language learning, but also offers a different perspective on European media, film, literature, history and different cultures and provides students with skills much needed today.

The Department of German Studies offers an exciting and wide-ranging language programme that enables students to excel in their language and intercultural skills, be it as beginners or advanced German students.

The  Global Media subject within BA Arts is an exciting new subject being launched by University of Galway in 2021. The subject aims to give you a robust and challenging university experience, introducing you to a range of areas such as interactive web media, data, media production, journalism and film studies. 

It will also give you a critical understanding of the changing global media environment and an insight into the role of the media in a globalised world. Various modules will also examine how society exchanges information through communication in democratic societies, as placed within historical and theoretically-grounded contexts.

This course teaches ancient classical Greek to those with no previous experience of the language until the point where they can read texts in classical Greek with the assistance of a dictionary.

This course covers the history and culture of ancient Greece and Rome, from Rome's foundation, c. 753BC, until the eclipse of Greek and Roman culture in the East, c. AD750. This includes the study of mythology, literature (poetry, prose, drama), art, architecture, and military and political history. No knowledge of the ancient languages is required, but you will also be given the opportunity to learn some Greek or Latin if you wish to do so.

History explores the complex processes of social and economic change, the choice of one set of political or ethical values over another, the context in which new ideas arise, and much more. We provide a solid grounding in the practice of history and boast expertise in a wide range of specialist topics such as life in medieval Ireland, the intersection of American and world history, the First World War, gender and sexual politics.

This is a wide ranging degree and includes the study of the histories of Ireland, Britain, continental Europe and beyond, alongside themes such as nationalism, colonialism, slavery, childhood, gender and war. Students are introduced to a number of different time periods from the Middle Ages to the twenty-first century.

The historians at UL are acknowledged scholars in their fields of research, and are committed to student-centred learning; they offer exciting and innovative modules throughout the four years of study. The history programme at UL will enable you to develop critical and analytical skills through an appreciation of primary sources, historiography and key events and changes, as well as through the study of the social, cultural and historical contexts in which change was produced. You will learn about source analysis, the processes informing history writing from the fifteenth century to the contemporary world. You can choose electives to suit your own interests, in Irish, European, American, and international history; you can focus on political, social, cultural, urban, and gendered approaches to history. 

History at UCC provides an exciting exploration of the past, tracing historical developments from medieval times to the present with special reference to their European, Irish and North American contexts.  

The Department of History offers a range of modules. These include modules in aspects of political, social and cultural history, including courses on Irish migration, unconventional warfare, death and the afterlife, kingship in medieval Ireland and the social and political history of modern Ireland.
