This course offers a broad introduction to Sport, Exercise and Recreation studies, providing students with the necessary skills to take up employment at entry level in the leisure industry. Students will improve their knowledge, competence and understanding of physical fitness and sport both practically and theoretically. 

The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence in the theory and practice underpinning sport and recreation activities to enable the learner to work under supervision in a variety of sport, recreation and exercise contexts.

Through engaging coursework and hands-on learning, students develop a strong understanding of how the body functions and how nutrition fuels performance and recovery as well as gaining an understanding of various elements of the sport and fitness industry.

Additionally, you can attain internationally recognised professional qualifications as an exercise professional and a wide range of coaching qualifications in sports such as GAA, FAI, Athletics, Kayaking, Mountain Biking and Disability Inclusion Training.

This course provides a hands-on introduction to the leisure and fitness industry, prioritizing a "learning by doing" approach through intensive practical modules. In addition to earning a QQI Level 5 Award in Sports, Recreation, and Exercise, students gain professional coaching certifications from Basketball Ireland and the FAI. 

This course is suitable for you if you have a strong interest in sport and exercise science and wish to pursue a career in high performance sport, a clinical profession (e.g. physiotherapy, dietetics, medicine) and/or scientific research in sport and health sciences. You will study the scientific principles underlying the promotion and enhancement of sport, physical health and exercise across the lifespan.

This full-time one-year programme delivered provides a solid foundation in Sport, Recreation and Exercise. The programme aims to enable the learner to acquire the knowledge, skill and competence in a range of sports, recreation and exercise activities to work independently and under supervision in a variety of sports related contexts and or to progress to higher education and training.
