Agricultural engineering is a specialised branch of engineering, concerned with the design, manufacture, modification and maintenance of equipment used in agriculture. As a student of MTU’s highly regarded agricultural engineering programmes, you will work in state-of-the-art facilities and graduate with a degree that enjoys an excellent reputation in the industry.

This programme has been designed to enable participants to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to under-stand mechanical principles applied to engines, machines, hand and power tools including focus, torque, pressure, power, horse-power, gears and belt speed and to be able to make compassion between diesel and petrol engines. On completion participants will be able to describe the component system associated with a tractor engine being able to assess a range of fuel, oil and grease lubrication and use hand and power tools for nuts and bolts. Carrying out a range of basic electrical maintenance and performing 50 hour and 500 hour service.

Agricultural mechanics are concerned with fault-finding, repair, overhaul and maintenance of farm tractors and farm machinery. These farm machines could include forage harvesters, balers, bale wrappers, mowers, combine harvesters, crop-sprayers, fertiliser distributors, diet feeders, tillage and slurry handling equipment.

Their skills overlap with those of other crafts within the motor family of crafts, therefore they are equipped to carry out some repair work on ATVs (All Terrain Vehicle– Quads), light and heavy commercial vehicles, earth moving equipment, forklift trucks and other vehicles. Besides the normal agricultural tractor and machinery garages, some large agricultural contracting firms employ their own agricultural mechanics. MTU is the only Technological University or Institute of Technology in the country which offers craft level apprenticeship courses in agricultural mechanics. Our facilities give apprentices a unique opportunity to experience the state-of-the-art technology currently being employed in the agricultural sector.

This programme provides students with education and training to work within the area of Agricultural Technology. The focus of this programme is firmly on the provision of skilled technicians for the farm machinery industry in Ireland. 

The subject matter includes tractor engineering and workshop process, machinery operation, electrical and electronic technology, administration and management, engineering science and mathematics, engineering drawing and CAD and computer studies, project and industrial placement together with a high degree of personal and practical skills. 

The purpose of the course is to prepare students for a career in the areas of agricultural science and agri-business. Graduates will have a strong background in the areas of science, food, agriculture, the environment, business and quality assurance.

Self-management, team working, business awareness, problem solving, land management and communication are all areas which will be strongly incorporated into the main core of this level 8 programme.

If you are interested in studying Agricultural Science but are not certain of which area to specialise in, you can select the ‘No Preference (NPF)’ option on your CAO form. Then, during your first year at UCD, you can choose your area of specialisation. Once you receive an offer on the Agricultural Science programme (DN250) you will be guaranteed a place in any of the 11 specialisations from second year.

Agricultural Systems Technology is aimed at students who wish to learn how to build, develop, and manage technology for the agriculture sector. Students will gain a deep understanding of how to use technology in order to improve and enhance sustainability, efficiency and reliability in farming and food production. You will take classes in engineering, science, mathematics and data science. Upon completing the course, you will be uniquely equipped to build, develop and manage technologies such as computer systems, networks, data management and sensors, machinery systems and precision agriculture.

The course develops farming, business and management skills to enable graduates to follow careers as successful commercial farmers or in the agri-business sector. It will provide graduates with the skills they will need to be able to participate actively in policy decisions – whether they are local, regional or international – which will influence their profession and its role in a modern economy. 

This course is run jointly by SETU and Teagasc. Students take agriculture-based modules at Kildalton Agricultural College and scientific related modules are taken at Cork Road Campus, Waterford. A free bus service operates between Cork Road Campus, Waterford and Kildalton.

Agriculture is of major importance to the Irish economy and most farms are family-operated with the farmer being the owner and manager and operator. The first two years of the course concentrates on equipping the student with the knowledge and skills needed to manage a modern commercial farm. The third year aims to expand the student’s business, managerial, scientific and IT skills.

This degree is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to manage modern commercial farms. The first two years focus on practical farming skills, while the third year enhances business, managerial, scientific, and IT competencies. Students undertake a 12-week farm placement in the second year, gaining hands-on experience on high-quality commercial farms. Graduates are prepared for roles in farm management, agrifood cooperatives, meat processing, and agribusiness sales.
