This course is specifically developed for adults with intellectual disabilities with the aim that learners will develop a lifelong learning ethos with the promotion of inclusion to third level education. This honours degree programme takes advantage of the various areas of expertise available at the three regional hospitals in the Health Service Executive Midlands area in Tullamore, Portlaoise and Mullingar, throughout the Midlands (Laois/Offaly and Longford/Westmeath) and with private healthcare facilities nationally.

The Bachelor of Science (Hons) in General Nursing, is a four year degree pre-registration course. On completion of the course, graduates will be eligible to register as a General Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) having obtained an university accredited honours degree awarded. The course is offered in conjunction with Sligo University Hospital and other Health Service Executive (HSE) organisations and groups in the Western region.

The aim of this one year full time course is to enable the learner to build the knowledge, skill and competence required for participation in higher education, including acquiring a broad range of knowledge in an area of personal interest, and key skills for academic research and enquiry.

Work placement / work experience may be a core feature/element of programmes in this field facilitating the enhancement of employability and transversal skills.
