Fundamentals of coaching science, pedagogy and professional practices in sports coaching are delivered through evidence-based and evidence-informed theory to the learning while also providing the opportunity to learn and apply the practical skills required to create a positive learning environment for individual athletes and/or teams.

Successful students will be proficient in areas such as screening, fitness testing, programme development, class instruction and the general day to day running of a gym or leisure centre. This course aims to introduce students to Sport Studies, provide a practical and theoretical foundation to fitness training. Enable students to acquire National Governing Body (NGB) Coaching qualifications in a number of sports. Provide a foundation for students wishing to study Sports and Recreation at a higher level.

he BSc (Hons) in Sports Coaching provides students (aspiring coaches) with advanced coaching techniques, styles, and education through a variety of sports (e.g. team, individual, outdoor pursuit), including inclusivity and disabilities. The BSc (Hons) in Sports Coaching and Performance is a four year honours degree programme that provides students with an advanced sport science education embedded with an applied coach education. Graduates earn an NFQ Level 5 accreditation, unlocking progression routes to Level 6 Personal Trainer qualifications or direct careers in sports coaching and the health and fitness industry. To ensure competitive career preparation, the program includes a specialized three-week block placement for hands-on work experience within a gym or leisure center setting.

The curriculum covers core technical competencies, including advanced fitness testing, specialist programme design, sports nutrition application, and the effective delivery of personal training sessions. Supported by extensive practical experience in the college gym, a dedicated work experience module, and additional certifications in Studio Cycling, Suspension Training, and Kettlebell instruction, students develop the confidence and qualifications necessary to enter the workforce successfully.

This one year course provides students with the opportunity to pursue further studies in Sports Injuries and Physical Therapy. The majority of students successfully completing this course progress onto Third Level Degree Programmes.
