Psychology is the study of behaviour and mental processes, and includes individual and social, human and animal, basic and applied aspects of these. The School of Psychology provides modules in all the main aspects of Psychology including Cognitive Psychology, Social Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Biological Psychology, Personality Psychology and Research Methods.

This four-year honours degree in Psychology provides a broad introduction to the discipline, followed by coverage of the core areas of study required for accreditation by the Psychological Society of Ireland, as well as allowing you to specialise in advanced areas in your final year of study. You will cover areas such as social, developmental, biological and cognitive psychology as well as personality and individual differences and research methods and statistics. You will also have an opportunity to undertake study abroad as well as work in an area relevant to psychology during your degree.

This interdisciplinary three year degree course in Psychology offers students the opportunity to follow a major course in psychology alongside minor study in an associate humanities discipline. Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes.

As such, the mission of the BA (Honours) in Psychology is to help students learn to think like psychologists. To achieve this goal, students generate and evaluate empirical evidence while considering theoretical perspectives of the discipline.

The BA (Hons) in Psychology is taught over 3 years full-time (or 4 years part-time). In the programme, learners engage with the core areas of psychology, including developmental, social, and cognitive psychology, abnormal psychology, psychotherapy, and neuropsychology.

A significant component of the programme is also dedicated to equipping learners with a strong capability in research methods, culminating in an independent research project.

An application for accreditation of this programme has been submitted to The Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI).

The programme blends both the scientific subject of Psychology and application of Psychology. The scientific study of mind and behaviour addresses six core areas: personality and individual differences, cognitive psychology, biopsychology, social psychology, developmental psychology and research methods.

Combined, these core areas provide graduates with the necessary psychological knowledge to pursue postgraduate studies in Psychology.

The study of Psychology builds our understanding of ourselves and others, and develops our capacity to support those in our communities who are marginalised, disadvantaged or face other life challenges.

This advanced course explores social issues of marginalisation such as disability, mental health and addiction. You will gain an understanding of the government and charitable services in our communities and the psychological interventions that support wellbeing and rehabilitation.

The focus of this course is developing the student’s self-awareness and interpersonal skills as well as practical skills around working with social systems and team dynamics in community workspaces.

This full-time one-year course is suited to anyone interested in the area of Psychology. It will equip students with a good grounding in theories of behaviour and society which they can bring into further study in Arts or Psychology degrees. It is also a good introduction for anyone thinking of switching into this area.

Based in the university’s Mayo’s campus in Castlebar, this programme helps to address a pressing need for skilled psychologists in the region. Completion of a PSI accredited undergraduate degree is an important first step in any aspiring psychologist’s career. Students with a second-class honours from a PSI accredited degree are eligible to apply for postgraduate training in a range of specialisations in psychology.

This course will introduce you to psychological science and provide you with a broad understanding of the careers within the social and behavioural sciences. Over the year, you will learn how psychologists’ study, explain, and predict behaviour, and how abnormal thinking and behaving is classified and treated. The BA in Psychology and Computing is a degree in which psychological research, theory, and knowledge is applied to a context of increasing importance to the modern world – the design, development, evaluation, and critical engagement with the technology and systems that increasingly surround us.

The course is designed to introduce the theory and practice of social studies and social care, to encourage learners to explore and develop their knowledge of social issues, psychology, community care and practice. This course also offers an opportunity to gain an insight into care provision and an understanding of client centred care.

This course enables you to study psychology and understand how disruptive technologies are fundamentally changing how we think, behave and live. You’ll delve into development and lifespan psychology, biological psychology and neuropsychology, social psychology, cognitive psychology and the psychology of individual difference, along with gaining a detailed understanding of the disruptive technologies that significantly reshaping our world. You’ll also gain practical skills in programming languages such as R and Python, data visualisation and storytelling.

The BSc in Psychology and Mathematics is the first course in Ireland to integrate these subjects, preparing students for a career combining the interpretation of human behaviour with high-level numeracy, analytical and problem-solving skills. 

By doing this course, you’ll gain in-depth knowledge and understanding of each discipline alongside a broad critical perspective on contemporary society. The main focus is to try and understand the individual, and how the individual is affected by, and affects, the world around them. This course is for people who wish to embark on a programme of study leading to a career in social care or pursue further studies in the areas of Pyschology, Sociology, Counselling or Addiction.

This four year honours degree in Psychology & Sociology provides you with a broad introduction to both disciplines in the first year, followed by coverage of the core areas of Psychology required for accreditation including: social, developmental, personality, biological and cognitive psychology as well as research methods and statistics. In your final year of study you will specialise in advanced areas of both Psychology and Sociology, in topics including multiculturalism, the media and applied psychology, while undertaking your own independent research project in an area of Psychology. You will also have an opportunity to undertake study abroad as well as work in an area relevant to psychology or sociology during the course of your studies.
