This practical and teaching theory course is designed to provide students with a range of skills which will prepare them for a career in coaching, teaching, fitness and sports related fields. Non-destructive testing is a specialisation of the course, this is the science of testing materials and systems without dismantling or damage, utilising X-rays, ultrasound, scanning electron microscopes, etc.

There is a high emphasis on practical work and projects - the student completes a number of projects over the course of the programme, and these can range from building electronic guitars, to making heart monitors, to finding new ways to use electron microscopy.

By the time you graduate, you’ll know the latest techniques used to observe the sky at different energies, and why multi-wavelength observations are crucial to understanding the true nature of cosmic sources. You’ll learn through lectures and by doing lab work, where you’ll get to explore the nature of sources using real X-ray data collected by the XMM-Newton observatory.
