Students of nursing learn about caring and the complexities of health and illness through interactive teaching and learning strategies in the classroom and the healthcare environment.

Practice (clinical and community) experience provides the student with opportunities to integrate the art and science of nursing and promotes the development of caring relationships with patients and their families and significant others.

This course involves the study of theoretical and practice based modules. It involves classroom teaching and taught placements in a variety of clinical and non-clinical settings. This honours degree programme takes advantage of the various areas of expertise available at the three regional hospitals in the Health Service Executive Midlands area in Tullamore, Portlaoise and Mullingar, throughout the Midlands (Laois/Offaly and Longford/Westmeath) and with private healthcare facilities nationally. 

General nursing involves caring for people of all ages both in hospital and community care settings. This programme will give you the knowledge and skills you need to work as a general nurse both in Ireland and other countries. You will spend time in class and in our specially built clinical skills labs.

The Bachelor of Nursing Science (General) course is a four-year degree programme provided in partnership with the Health Service Executive (HSE) West, Blackrock Health Galway Clinic, Bon Secours Hospital Galway. The programme consists of theoretical and clinical modules. The theoretical content aims to provide students with the knowledge necessary to underpin their professional practice.

As key members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team and in partnership with patients, general nurses provide for the physical, psychological and social wellbeing of persons with acute or chronic physical illness.

The Bachelor of Science (Hons) in General Nursing, is a four year degree pre-registration course. On completion of the course, graduates will be eligible to register as a General Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) having obtained an university accredited honours degree awarded. The course is offered in conjunction with Sligo University Hospital and other Health Service Executive (HSE) organisations and groups in the Western region.

The aim of this one year full time course is to enable the learner to build the knowledge, skill and competence required for participation in higher education, including acquiring a broad range of knowledge in an area of personal interest, and key skills for academic research and enquiry.

Work placement / work experience may be a core feature/element of programmes in this field facilitating the enhancement of employability and transversal skills.

The BSc Genetics will teach you to understand how genes work in individuals and populations, and how this genetic information is passed from one generation to the next. Genomics is the study of these data to make important discoveries in areas such as medicine, agriculture, evolution, the environment and biotechnology.

This programme combines the study of the Geography, Landscape and Adventure. Graduates will be empowered to promote careful use and management of an increasingly threatened natural world and to educate others in wise use and sustainable practice.
