The aim of mental health nursing is to promote mental health and wellness, to plan with, support and provide nursing care to people who suffer from mental illness and mental distress, and to support families and communities in dealing with mental health challenges. This care can be provided in acute care facilities such as hospitals, in peoples own homes and community care settings. Supporting on-going mental health recovery is an important part of being a mental health nurse.

This programme aims to enable students to develop knowledge, competencies, attitudes and skills to enable them to function effectively as professional nurses in a healthcare environment providing recovery focused individualised care. The programme provides opportunities for development of the fundamental nursing skills and allows the student to adapt these skills to a variety of populations and environments. This four-year BSc (Hons) in Psychiatric Nursing offered in conjunction with HSE West and the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) has been developed in response to the changing mental health needs of the Irish population. The role of the mental health nurse is to foster the health and well-being of individuals experiencing changes in their mental health status.

People with a mental illness are cared for in many different places such as hospitals, hostels, day centres, in the community and their own homes. We want to promote positive attitudes to mental health and to help people deal with any mental/emotional challenges they face in life.

Our Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Mental Health Nursing is a four year course that will prepare you for a fulfilling career in mental health and associated fields. This programme provides an introduction to the field of Mental Health as it applies to the broad spectrum of professions. A metal fabricator will be involved in the installation and manufacture of a range of metallic systems to include pressure vessels; tank and boiler manufacture; structural steel systems; plate steel systems and piping systems.

The job entails the reading of drawings and working with materials such as low carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel and aluminium. A metal fabricator uses skills such as measuring, marking out, cutting and welding materials using different processes and assembly techniques. A metal fabricator may also work outdoors and may be required to work at heights.

This course explores theories of religion, the monotheistic religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, the religions of Asia and Africa, movements such as New Atheism, New Religious Movements and the interaction between religion and politics, science, or art.

Over the duration of the course, learners will develop the knowledge, skills, and professional behaviours, that are necessary to become compassionate, competent, and committed healthcare professionals. Academic and clinical knowledge and skills will be developed throughout this rewarding course, using inclusive, authentic, learning approaches and simulated learning environments.

The first three years combine learning in university and clinical midwifery practice in the maternity hospitals. The final year will include a 36-week period of internship in midwifery practice. This course will provide you with the knowledge and skills to meet the needs of women and their families in an individualised, culturally sensitive manner.
