Our English programme enables you to develop critical thinking skills through an appreciation of the wide world of literature in English, and by analysing the social and historical contexts through which that literature emerged. You will learn about the art of writing and shaping narrative by exploring literary genres and history from the 700s on. You choose electives to suit your own interests, in Irish, British, American, and world literatures, and in gender and sexuality studies among other specialist topics.

The BA in English introduces you to the subject in its fullest sense. You will study English across the centuries and can cover areas such as creative writing, film, drama and theatre. If you're a keen reader and interested in technology, we can help you hone your digital and literary skills with courses on digital media and through technology-enabled learning. You will develop your knowledge and writing skills, and get more from the books and films you love. 

English is of central importance as a means of communication in the fields of commerce, media, law, science and technology. Having the ability to speak and write fluently and accurately in English is clearly an asset to anyone who wishes to follow a career in any of these fields.

European Studies is a multidisciplinary subject, in which you will explore the processes and consequences of political, diplomatic, administrative and economic decision-making in the European Union. As a European Studies graduate, you will be prepared for the challenges associated with a more interdependent and enlarged EU.

Finance is taught as an application of Economics. It examines the role of government and international organisations in the management and regulation of financial markets. Finance is the study of investment risk and reward.

Folklore at UCC introduces the main areas of the discipline, such as narratives, stories, festivals, rituals, tools, technologies and material culture, before developing the theories, ideas and methods of Folklore, including the theories of fieldwork, original research, archives and community identity.

Over the course of your degree programme, you will receive an excellent grounding in all aspects of French language through core modules in French Grammar, Writing in French, and Translation, while in your second and final years you may choose from a range of optional modules, such as Francophone Politics and Ideas, Womens Writing in French, Introduction to French Cinema and Breton.

This course comprises both the intensive study of a foreign language and the development of knowledge and understanding of French culture and literature. As part of an Arts degree, this subject is one of three subjects you choose in first year. In second and third year you continue with two of the subjects taken in First Arts. French at UCC will not only expand your knowledge and use of the language, it will introduce you to modern French culture and the cultures of French-speaking countries worldwide.

Along with translation, philosophy, visual culture and linguistics, you will study a wide range of topics, including history, literature, music, theatre, politics and the connections France has to other countries.

French Studies can be taken as part of the MIC Arts Degree as a joint honours combination. You will learn about French society, literature and culture as well as improving your language skills. You will use a wide range of materials to aid your study, including textbooks, newspapers, film, radio, TV and internet.

Geography involves the study of subjects such as the impact of societies on the quality of the environment; geographical approaches to the study of world population; the relationship between culture, landscape transformation and politics. No prior knowledge of geography is assumed.

As part of an Arts degree, this subject is taken with two other subjects in your first year. You continue to study two of your first year subjects in second and third years. It may also be possible to specialize in one subject after first year.

Geography at UL consists of modules in both human and physical geography. Studying geography will equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge to tackle and plan for the future needs of society. Through lectures, tutorials, lab work and field trips, you will be equipped to identify, analyse and explain complex human and natural phenomena in a succinct and clear manner. You will learn to work as members of a team, as well as working independently, all the while developing your critical thinking skills. 

As a student of geography, you will learn to view the world using this geographical lens. Geographers examine geographical processes in a variety of thematic areas within geography including landscape, heritage, migration, culture, food, tourism, environment, economy, cities, climate, geomorphology, and development

It has links with a wide range of other disciplines, and is a subject with enormous contemporary relevance in a world facing challenges such as globalisation, inequality, natural resource depletion, environmental degradation, climate change, and large-scale international migration and refugee flows. As it is inherently interdisciplinary, Geography helps to develop a wide range of talents.

As a student of German, you will have a twin focus on language and culture. Through language classes and with supporting material such as film, television and outings to cultural events, you will aim to become a fluent speaker and writer of German. If you’re a beginner, you can take intensive language classes.

All students of German have the opportunity to spend the third year of their undergraduate studies living in a German-speaking country and to graduate with a BA International.

This course emphasises competent use of language, grammatical accuracy and systematic vocabulary building along with an improvement of German cultural awareness.

As part of an Arts degree, this subject is one of three subjects you choose in first year. In second and third year you continue with two of the subjects taken in First Arts. Third Year is spent on an Erasmus study year abroad in a partner university.
