The BSc (Hons) Health Science is a three-year honours degree that provides a direct pathway into MSc programmes in Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, and Dietetics.

Healthcare is a broad field with diverse areas of work where health science graduates can make a difference to people’s lives. There are many career options across a wide range of health related industries, ranging from direct individualised care to people across the lifespan from infancy to old age and persons with special needs, or through telehealth and telecare careers, to health care management roles or research.

The overall aim of the programme is to provide the learner with the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, skill and competence to work independently and under supervision in a supportive role within the Health Service.

We focus on providing the necessary skills and knowledge required across a range of care settings with a variety of age groups. The course welcomes those who are already employed in a caring role, and require the necessary qualifications.

This full-time programme provides learners with the relevant qualifications to work in the healthcare sector as healthcare assistants/support staff in hospitals, nursing homes or in the community. Students are provided with the professional skills and qualifications necessary to pursue a career in the emergency services.

The programme is offered to the learner on a full time basis and has been designed to be sufficiently flexible to enable the learner to take up a position on Health Service Skills in North Connaught College.

Health Service Skills provides students with an opportunity to study on a course that leads directly into employment or Healthcare level 6 in North Connaught College or Higher Education.

This course is ideal for people interested in working in partnership with others to advocate and care for individuals or groups who require support. Healthcare assistants are key members of the inter-disciplinary team which delivers care in hospitals, residential care homes and private houses. This course will give professional carers the knowledge and skills to support vulnerable adults who, for a variety of reasons, require short-term or long-term assistance.

The purpose of the Health Service Skills QQI Level 5 programme is to equip learners with the practical skills, professional competencies, and theoretical understanding required to work effectively as a Healthcare Assistant across a wide range of health and social care settings.

This award prepares students to support service users with dignity, respect, and professionalism while developing a strong foundation for further study in healthcare-related disciplines.

The aim of this full-time one-year programme is to provide the learner with an understanding of treatment and therapeutic interventions in everyday activities in a variety of healthcare settings.

On completion of this programme learners will have the skills, knowledge and competencies to work under supervision in a variety of healthcare settings or to progress to further and or higher education and training in Ireland or the UK. This course will also equip students with basic skills in physiotherapy assistance.

This course will facilitate the learner to explore supervisory roles within the Health Service with a view to reskilling/up-skilling and exploring concepts and subject areas required for future employment. Learners will gain the knowledge and skills to apply a range of supervisory management concepts, theories and techniques to a supervisory management role in the provision of health services.

Develop practical care skills to support others in healthcare settings. Build confidence, gain experience, and prepare for a fulfilling career in care or further study.

This is a one year full time course leading to a Level 6 QQI Award in Health Services Supervisory Management Skills.

This course offers holders of a Level 5 health-related award the opportunity to undertake further study in this area. This award will equip the learner with the necessary knowledge, skills and competence to undertake supervisory roles in the caring environment.

It also offers a sound introduction to management in the health services for those wishing to build upon their experience and to gain a formal qualification in management.

This course provides learners with the knowledge and skills to work in the nutrition or general healthcare area where nutritional, general health or mental health support is required.

Learners will learn the importance of developing a holistic and client focused approach to work and will develop the knowledge and skillset to meet the emotional, psychological and social needs of clients in the healthcare sector. The role exercise, diet and nutrition plays in maintaining and enhancing both physical and mental health will be a focus of the course.

This programme will provide you with the skills to launch a career as a professional in the health, fitness and leisure sectors. It involves the study of six major subject areas, five of which are common to all students: Exercise Science, Health Studies, Activity Leadership, Physical Education and Professional Practice. For the sixth subject area, students study either ‘Education in Aquatics’ or ‘Outdoor and Experiential Learning’.

At the end of second year, students enter the Physical Education, Adapted Physical Activity or General Health and Leisure streams which allows students to begin specialise in specific topics in third year or continue to take the general health and leisure programme. There is also a 12-week work placement in third year, which can be completed with a local, national or international service provider.
