The School of Law seeks to achieve excellence in teaching, research and professional development. The School provides a range of LLB courses, all of which are Qualifying Law Degrees (QLDs) for the purposes of the legal professions, as well as a range of postgraduate courses.

This course allows you to obtain a highly respected degree in law, whilst simultaneously acquiring a broad knowledge of economics. Certain areas of law (e.g. competition regulation and intellectual property) are heavily influenced by economic theory. BCL (Law with Economics) graduates are uniquely equipped to understand these regulatory frameworks in all of their conceptual complexity.

On this degree, you’ll embark on a field of cross-disciplinary study which is intellectually very demanding, but also tremendously enriching and of immense practical importance.

Law with French Law is one of two French Law Courses offered by Sutherland School of Law, the other being the dual degree – the BCL/Maîtrise (more information on the following page). All students interested in the French Law Courses enter the BCL (Law with French Law) in first year.

Both degrees offer the exciting opportunity for immersion in two of the world’s major legal systems. Student will learn about the common law system, practised in Ireland and the UK (and in some form, in most of the English-speaking world) and the civil law system which is used throughout Europe.

There’s a natural affinity between the disciplines of law and history. Each is shaped by the other. Important historical events are often interlinked with contemporary legal structures. Legal reform may be prompted by the defining events of the past.

This course allows you to acquire a highly respected degree in law, whilst also pursuing a passion for history and acquiring a deeper understanding of past events that have shaped our current legal system.

The BCL (Law with Irish) course allows undergraduate law students to access a cohesive set of Irish language modules which are relevant to the study and practice of law. This programme offers you the opportunity to acquire a highly respected BCL degree, whilst additionally deepening your competence in the Irish language in the context of law.

Your Irish language communication skills will be developed by the resources provided by a modern multi-media language laboratory (An Teanglann) and the advanced language skills training in Lárionad de Bhaldraithe.

Legal systems express and reflect the prevailing moral, political, social and economic philosophy of the State. Law and philosophy are, therefore, complementary fields of study. An understanding of law is fundamentally enhanced by a deeper knowledge of philosophical theory. This course offers you a highly respected degree in law, combined with an enriched appreciation of its philosophical underpinnings.

Law and politics are inextricably linked by the legislative process. This course allows you to obtain a highly respected law degree, whilst also acquiring a deeper understanding of political theory and the political process. Many UCD law graduates have progressed to political careers. Others have become high-profile political commentators.

The BCL with Social Justice course, the first of its kind in Ireland, combines the study of Law with rigorous analysis of social injustice, its causes and remedies. It will appeal to students who are interested in issues of equality, diversity and disadvantage, and who want to look in-depth at the social context in which law operates.

On completion, you’ll be uniquely equipped to offer a critical perspective on issues such as the adequacy of our criminal justice system, the legal treatment of women and minority groups, and the underlying causes of social and economic injustice.

Law
The law degree will appeal to you if you are interested in society and how it works, how we regulate the relationships between people. Given the wide range of legal modules, the degree attracts students with a broad range of interests.

Business Studies
This four year programme offers the opportunity to focus upon the many areas of overlapping interest between the two disciplines, for example, the structure of companies and other forms of business organisation, competition law and regulation of markets, consumer law, labour law, finance and financial markets, taxation, the protection of intellectual property and international perspectives on law and business.

Law

History

The History programme introduces students to the diversity of historical studies, which include modules covering medieval and modern periods, including Irish, European, and American history, as well as some modules exploring the skills and methods which historians use, and the kinds of debates in which historians engage.

The aim of this blended online Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree programme is for learners to graduate with the knowledge, skills and abilities they need in the theory and practice of leadership and community development so that they can make a professional contribution to communities, groups, societies and organisations. The course will prepare graduates for life-long learning so that they will be able to further develop their knowledge and skills through experience and professional and/or academic education.

The social enterprise sector has been growing rapidly in Ireland in recent years and gaining government support. This certificate will introduce learners to the global and Irish experience of different types of social enterprises and their place in society. It will help develop critical thinking in learners as they develop a broader knowledge of the social enterprise eco-system.

The certificate will be of particular use to those considering starting up a social enterprise, social business, or developing a social enterprise element in an existing organisation. It is also helpful to those working within a social enterprise. Some graduates of the certificate have become start-up social entrepreneurs. This is a growing network that learners in the certificate will be helped to connect with for support and sharing learning.

This one year course at North Connaught College of Further Education, Tubbercurry, Sligo, is designed for those who would like to pursue a career working with young people and teenagers or working with a variety of community groups. The course will equip you with the skills and confidence to take a leadership role, run fun and engaging group activities and manage the inevitable conflicts of interest that arise in group situations.

The Irish Centre for Business Excellence (ICBE) has partnered with the University of Limerick (UL) to deliver Ireland’s first apprenticeship at level 9 (MSc): The Master of Science in Strategic Quality Management – Lean Sigma Systems. This programme is run in conjunction with our industry partners.

This Executive Apprenticeship will give you a Master Black Belt level knowledge of theories, methods and improvement techniques based around the philosophy of scientific management, lean thinking and six sigma. This masters programme will prepare the Lean Sigma Manager to apply lean sigma methods in the definition, design, research, development, utilisation, maintenance and cost-control of processes and equipment to deliver products/services, improve qualities and reduce costs of such processes and products/services.

There is a strong focus on integrating the application of the concepts, tools and techniques in the participants’ organisation during the course of the programme. There is significant directed project work applying the lean sigma concepts, which meets the knowledge development, aim of a masters level programme and develop participants’ skills in the field of lean sigma management.

This course is designed to prepare students for front-line receptionist duties with a particular emphasis on a Legal environment. This course not only equips the learner with the administrative and IT skills needed to work in a modern office but also develops transversal skills which are sought after by employers today. In addition, the Legal Practice and Procedures module provides the learner with an overview of the Irish legal system and provides the learner with the language, skills and knowledge to work in a legal environment.
