The degree programme is four years in duration. Early modules are concerned with building up your understanding of science relevant to the environment (biology, ecology, chemistry, computing, mathematics and physics). The basic concepts used in these subjects are applied to specific environmental science applications. Later modules in the programme focus on the areas of environmental management, environmental technology, environmental impact assessment, waste management, sustainability and conservation ecology, environmental monitoring and health & safety.

This full-time one-year programme will be of interest to those wishing to work or pursue further study in Environmental Science. Career areas include waste management, renewable energy, nature conservation, and numerous areas within the environmental sector. The core science modules open up many routes for further study in general science areas as well as other sustainable areas.

This course has been designed to meet the needs of a variety of students wishing to study Environmental Science, specifically those who did not satisfy the entry requirements for direct entry to a degree course, and adult returnees to education.

Environmental Science and Engineering is a new integrated undergraduate with postgraduate degree course that aims to train the next generation of graduates who have the competencies, knowledge and experience necessary to design and deploy solutions that protect and improve our environment and human wellbeing, and that work with rather than against the natural world to foster biodiversity, climate action and sustainable use of Earth’s finite resources.

This honours degree offers a unique combination of scientific and instrumentation based modules to train graduates in the skills required to become environmental monitoring specialists, specifically in the areas of air and water quality analysis.

Whether out on field trips or doing nanoscale environmental analysis in the lab, you’ll gain the analytical and practical skills to understand, protect and improve our environment. Not only that, but you’ll get to contribute in a practical way to reducing carbon on- and off-campus in our new module, Towards Zero Carbon.

Over the four years, you’ll gain a strong scientific core in biology, chemistry, physics and maths. This is vital to working as an environmental scientist, but also gives you flexibility when it comes to your career choice. In your third year, you’ll do a nine-month work placement and you also have the chance to study abroad. And of course, throughout the course, you’ll be able to contribute practically to reducing carbon reliance.

As the world is ever more focused on protecting the environment and cutting carbon emissions, there is ongoing and increasing demand for qualified scientists. Graduates from this course typically go on to high-impact careers as research scientists in areas such as environmental protection, and water, air and soil management and conservation.

Assessments are planned to develop skills that employers value highly. This includes scientific report writing, presentations, group work and practical skills. Students have the option to study abroad with our partner university in Sweden. There is also an option to take part in a two-week international summer school in the Netherlands or Sweden.

Environmental Studies with Business combines the study of sustainability and environmental issues with business areas such as accounting and applied economics. Businesses are now addressing environmental issues that are impacting our planet so now is a great opportunity to respond positively and link environmental change to the business sector. Successful graduates have the opportunity to progress to BSc in Sustainability in UCD (DN240) and a wide range of business degrees.

The overall aim of the programme is to equip you with degree-level competence in the disciplines of Equine Science and a choice of professional studies in either Equitation* (the art or practice of horse riding or horsemanship) or Equine Business Management. Graduates of the programme contribute to the continued development of the horse industry through the application of their knowledge, skills and research in Science, Equitation and Business Management.

The Certificate and Diploma courses are suitable if you want to achieve academic qualifications before starting work in an area of horse-based or related industries. The programmes offer a broad base of learning in equine science, equitation and equine related business topics. This three stranded approach provides a strong platform for building a flexible career. In most semesters you will have a choice of module that allows you to align your studies with your personal interests and ambitions. Students who progress to the Diploma in Science (Equine Science) can choose to follow either a business or equitation specialist route. 

This course is run in conjunction with Brennanstown Riding School.

The focus of the course is to develop the skills to work in the equine industry, while at the same time developing learners’ personal, interpersonal, and workplace skills. The content includes a range of vocational modules including stable and yard routine, equine nutrition, equine anatomy and physiology, sport horse riding, animal welfare and core modules in work experience, customer service and maths.

The course is designed to provide professional education and training to learners who love horses and have a particular interest in gaining employment in the equine industry in a variety of roles. The course will enable them to pursue a career in the equine industry or continue their studies at higher and/or third level.

The aim of this programme is to enable the learner to develop the knowledge, skills and competence in a broad range of equine skills to work in a variety of equine sectors under supervision, or progress to further education or training.

In North Connaught College our students will be facilitated to explore Horsemanship with a view to re-skilling/up-skilling and exploring concepts and subject areas that may interest the learner in future programmes or employment.

If you hold a QQI Level 5 in Equine studies, then why not take the opportunity to undertake further studies in Equine Breeding.

Graduates will be able to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of equine breeding skills and pasture management together with theoretical and abstract thinking concepts related to breeding horses, horse conformation and pasture management. This award is designed to enable students to acquire the knowledge, skills and competence to work in a supervisory role in a stud or to progress to further or higher education and training.

The QQI Level 6 award in Equine Breeding is classed as an advanced certificate and meets the requirements for The Green Certificate and Young Trained Farmer status.
