Increased use of Artificial Intelligence (Al) can bring major social and economic benefits by automating tasks currently done by humans. AI computers can analyse and learn from information at higher accuracy and speed than humans can. It offers massive gains in efficiency and performance to most or all industry sectors, for example in Health, Financial Technology, Advanced Manufacturing, Social Media.

Al is software that can be integrated into existing processes, improving them, scaling them, and reducing their costs, by making or suggesting more accurate decisions through better use of information. Artificial Intelligence has also been a main focus of Computer Science research at Ulster University for over 25 years, and we are uniquely positioned to deliver this degree course.

The Bachelor of Science programme is of four years duration.  In the first year the student will undertake an intensive learning programme of computer science fundamentals, programming including an immediate introduction to an AI-appropriate language, and mathematics.  In subsequent years the focus on artificial intelligence will intensify while also including core computer science aspects such as operating systems, data structures and algorithms, database systems, computer graphics.

Data analytics / mining and more specialist topics such as language engineering / translation and cultural aspects of AI are covered in later years.  Students who opt to exit after four years with a bachelors degree will complete, in their final year, a year-long Final year Project that is the culmination of their studies drawing on their skills in research, algorithm or system design, and implementation. 

This course covers a wide and varied range of subjects across multiple disciplines that will help build critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills. It is designed to be very flexible, allowing students to create their own learning journey by combining different subjects, both traditional and new. Over four years, students can shape their education and select options from any of the five university faculties.

This course offers a multifaceted exploration of the human experience through various Arts disciplines. It provides students with a rich foundation in subjects such as history, archaeology, politics, literature and drama while fostering critical thinking, creativity, and cultural appreciation. Through the study of historical contexts, cultural and social theories, and practical skills, students develop a deep understanding of humanity.

The Bachelor of Arts is a four-year, full-time, honours degree (Level 8). At MIC the programme is flexible and wide-ranging. Students study four different major subjects in First Year and focus on two of these in Second Year, which they will then continue to study to degree level as joint honours.

You can study a combination of subjects from familiar Arts subjects such as English, French, German or History, to newer subjects such as Drama & Theatre Studies, Media & Communication Studies, Psychology or the newest addition to the programme, Business Studies. In Third Year, you will have opportunities to work, to travel, and to study abroad as part of the Off-Campus Programme.

Students will gain insight into many topics in Psychology including the biological basis of behaviour, the multiple layers of human development, and the different perspectives that underpin theories of human cognition, personality, and individual differences.

Students will acquire basic skills in the scientific and ethical research practices employed by psychologists in the study of human behaviour, and the critical capabilities for evaluating information and claims. 

This programme is designed to provide students with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the key trends and changes in family life and child and youth development, complimented by in-depth sociological and political studies.

NUI Galway offers three exciting programmes dedicated to Children’s and Youth Studies, an interdisciplinary area, which examines the social, cultural, legal, psychological and historical discourses shaping the lives of children and youth today. The programme provides a unique opportunity to study drama, theatre and performance from a practical, theoretical and historical perspective. You will explore all aspects of performance from theatre to film, story telling and new media.

This course is taught as a writing workshop, dividing students into small groups, with weekly writing and revision. Participants will have a chance to meet professional writers, and will be guided through their years at the university by a programme director and mentor.

All assessment is based on continuous exercises, project work and portfolio expansion. There are no end-of-term papers or exams for Creative Writing.

This course provides a comprehensive grounding in the theory and history of film and digital media as well as training in film practice, screenwriting, and digital development and design. Students become familiar with industry standard tools and techniques, in addition to developing the fundamentals for creative professional practice in applied art and design.

The Bachelor of Arts (Global Experience). Entry has subject groupings.  Students of GY129, Bachelor of Arts (Global Experience), study 3 subjects in their first year, from a selection of 21 subjects. A subject belongs to one of 7 groups, and you cannot select more than one subject from a group. On progression to second year, you continue to study two of the subjects to degree level.

This innovative and highly flexible Languages degree allows you to study two languages, with the possibility of taking another language at Beginner’s Level in the First year. Linguistics, Translation Studies and Media are embedded at all levels of the programme.

Literature and culture modules will be available for those students who wish to pursue a teaching career so that they will fulfil the requirements of the Teaching Council.

The BA Global Media is an exciting new programme being launched by University of Galway in 2021. The programme aims to give you a robust and challenging university experience, introducing you to a range of areas such as interactive web media, data, media production, journalism and film studies. It will also give you a critical understanding of the changing global media environment and an insight into the role of the media in a globalised world.

History is about people, the forces that shaped their lives and the ways in which they changed their societies. The BA (History) is a four-year degree that offers you choice and flexibility in what and how you study.

It enables you to combine your study of History (your ‘major’) with two other subjects (your ‘minors’) that complement your major: choose from minors in Journalism and Global Media, Political and Sociological Studies, Economics and Public Policy, Philosophy, French, Italian and German.

You’ll acquire proficiency in your chosen language (French, German, Spanish) and learn about culture, film, literary traditions and intercultural communication.

Students choose one other subject from: Gaeilge or Politics.

You’ll have the option to take a year abroad, extending your degree to four years and graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (Joint Honours) International.

Internship Year
You can opt to apply for a year-long INTRA work placement in Year Three.

This programme will prepare you for a variety of careers and also provides a foundation for postgraduate study.

The course will allow you to study all 8 of the core modules examined in the entrance exams to the Law Society as a trainee solicitor. These are constitutional law, contract law, criminal law, property law, equity and trusts, European Union law, tort law, and company law.

Choosing the law stream on the Bachelor of Arts at DCU will allow you to explore the key foundations of law while also studying another discipline. This will provide you with an interdisciplinary education, covering many important areas of law while also choosing from History, International Languages or Media Studies.

You’ll have the option to take a year abroad, extending your degree to four years and graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (Joint Honours) International.

Media Studies graduates generally have excellent communication, analytical and team-working skills – skills that are in high demand in the knowledge economy. These graduates are likely to find employment in a range of commercial, state, and non-governmental organisations, and they will have a competitive advantage in careers like advertising, marketing, public relations, advocacy and international development.

Students choose one other subject from: English, International Languages or Politics.

You’ll have the option to take a year abroad, extending your degree to four years and graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (Joint Honours) International.

Internship Year

This programme will prepare you for a variety of careers and also provides a foundation for postgraduate study.

Politics is an ideal subject for people interested in issues such as public policy; human rights; international development; and conflict, security and peacebuilding. It prepares graduates for a wide range of careers such as policy analysts, researchers and/or programme officers in national and international governmental organisations (GOs) and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and International affairs. Graduates may also choose to work in multilateral agencies such as the European Union, the United Nations or the World Bank. Or they may choose to enter politics directly at local, national and international levels.

Students choose one other subject from: Geography, History, Law, World Religions and Theology.

You’ll have the option to take a year abroad, extending your degree to four years and graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (Joint Honours) International.

Internship Year

If you are a budding reporter or are curious about the world around you and like to write, or have a passion for radio, television or social media, then this is an ideal programme for you. The BA Journalism is an exciting programme for University of Galway (reformed for 2019) which offers you an opportunity to gain highly coveted communication and media production skills while undertaking an Arts degree.

This degree combines a teacher training qualification with teaching practice throughout the duration of the programme. As part of the programme you will undertake a teaching placement in each year, completing 100 hours of teaching between years 1-3 and a furher 13 weeks a post-primary school in your fourth year.

These three BA programmes are part-time, evening (with some daytime options available), interdisciplinary degrees for mature applicants (21 years or older on 1 January in year of application).

The BA in Music at the University of Galway is Ireland’s newest undergraduate music degree. Students learn about the theory and history of music, and develop creative practical skills in performance, composition and technology. There is also the possibility to take a work placement in a music-related field during the third year of the degree, for which students will receive training in transferable professional skills.
