Music Teaching and Performance is a music qualification that develops two deeply interconnected skills required by every professional musician. This flexible course provides a choice of performance or pedagogy focused pathways, putting students in charge of their own specialism.

You will develop practical skills in music production, audio editing, multimedia sound and live sound in our professional facilities. This is matched with specialist lessons in MIDI sequencing, location recording and music technology to help you explore your creative musical potential.

Practical projects will also enable you to learn about the world of live sound, events management and the music industry. This course features a high level of training in a wide range of industry standard music production software including Logic Pro® and Pro Tools®.

This course has been designed to prepare learners for opportunities in in the Music Industry. This is achieved by providing learners with essential music theory, an introduction to recording skills, music practice, event production and a broad insight into the Music Industry.

The undergraduate Music degree programme at Ulster University is based around four core elements: Performance, Composition, Musicology and Music Technology.

Year 1 is designed to provide students with a comprehensive overview of musical styles, genres and disciplines enabling them to develop existing skills and interests as well as acquire a range of new ones. As a Major student, you'll take modules in Musicology and Performance Studies.

Year 2 allows students the opportunity to begin specialising by introducing a number of optional modules. As a Major student, you'll take modules in Musicology and Performance Studies.

Year 3 enables students to focus their degree programme in one or more related areas of specialist interest with a broad range of advanced level modules. Placement presents students the opportunity to take part in an internship with a local music or arts organisation while the Project options allow students to pursue an independent course of research or practical work in a chosen field of musical study.

Music, Film and Drama are art forms that speak to the very core of human experience; they impact our lives every day. This 4-year programme allows students to immerse themselves in the close study of these forms, to understand them from cultural and historical perspectives, and to explore the ways in which they influence and transform each other.

The BSc in Music, Media and Performance Technology is a programme that enables students to enter into the contemporary world of digital media, film, sound and interactive technology and performance. Students develop a wide range of skills and are given many opportunities to become proficient in areas of special interest. The programme provides a strong contextual understanding of culture and media and enables technical proficiency in the technologies of culture-making, including coding, cinematography and sound engineering.

If you are interested in understanding music’s place in society, developing music technology skills, writing music, or improving your skills as an informed performer, this course could be for you. A music degree will prepare you for a wide range of careers, in the creative arts, journalism, music production, arts management, research, and teaching.

Students combine this subject with their choice of French, German, Irish or Spanish.

Philosophy  (Restricted)

This course offers the opportunity to engage in depth with questions of metaphysics (about the fundamental nature of reality), epistemology (the theory of knowledge), ethics (theories of right and wrong), political philosophy (the nature of the just state), philosophy of religion (reasoning about God), philosophy of mind (questions about thought, language and reason) and various other areas. We teach courses which have both systematic and historical emphases and in the higher years students can choose options and get to write a thesis on a topic of their own choice.

Religion

This course explores theories of religion, the monotheistic religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, the religions of Asia and Africa, movements such as New Atheism, New Religious Movements and the interaction between religion and politics, science, or art.

Students on this course will be introduced to the fundamentals of making and repairing stringed and fretted musical instruments, both acoustic and electric. Students will make their own musical instrument for example a mandolin or a guitar. They will also learn specialist hand and machine craft skills in order to develop their creative abilities in this area. Students who have an interest in music will find that they can enhance their skills by learning the rudiments of how instruments are made, stringed and generate sound.

The BFA major in musical theatre offers a conservatory and holistic approach to musical theatre training, one that not only concentrates on a participatory performance perspective, but also prepares the student for a wide and exciting range of careers available in the performing arts industry.

While performance remains an integral component of the programme, students are also prepared for the vast array of work that supports and produces performance, such as directing and staging, creating written material for performance, production, management, marketing and funding of the performing arts.

The degree produces a wide spectrum of transferable skills such as effective presentational technique, expertise in using the voice and the body as communicative instruments, interpretational and compositional competency with written texts, management, marketing and organisational skills.

This is an intensively hands-on course, aimed at talented students who already have a basic level of skill in the three ‘triple-threat’ areas: singing, dancing and acting.

The course combines personal skills training with group and teamwork, expressed through annual public performances in professional theatres. As well as working with highly qualified core staff, the students will meet professionals from all musical theatre fields, following up- to-the-minute trends and making contacts and networks for life.

This course provides essential and comprehensive training in the three main principles of musical theatre, namely acting, singing and dancing, which are supported by academic modules which explore further understanding of the industry. Students also participate in all important performance practice and projects. The modules have been designed to have a clear progression through each of the three years culminating in musical theatre productions in year three.

Thih is a creative and lively four-year degree in media and Irish which is taught entirely through Irish. It covers the latest thinking and research in the fast-changing world of digital media, and provides a balanced mix of academic study and practical, hands-on learning in journalism, television and radio production, broadcasting and multimedia, together with a thorough grounding in Irish language and literature and a focus on Gaeltacht heritage and culture.
