This course is designed to prepare students for employment in the security industry. The course material provides an introduction to the relevant areas of the industry in Ireland. An integral part of the course is the work placement, giving students on-the-job experience.

This course can be a valuable addition to those who may apply to join An Garda Siochana, the Defence Forces or the Prison Services. It has been designed to meet the needs of the security industry. Under the Private Security Services Act 2004 all security personnel are required to register and obtain a licence. Students who pass Basic Guarding, Security Industry Awareness and Door Security Procedures may apply for a Security licence under the Private Security Services Act 2004.

Participants can gain their Private Security Licence after completing this course.

Work experience is also a core feature of the Security Studies programme with students spending time in a security setting, enhancing employability.

This course is of par­ticular relevance to students who are interested in a career at management level in the security industry. As part of the Security Operations and Administration (Supervisory) course, students complete an extended period of work place­ment in a supervisory capacity with recognised companies. In order to complete this element of the course, potential students are advised to hold or have applied for the security licence required under the Private Security Services Act 2004.

This three-year, full-time programme provides students with the opportunity to achieve nationally accredited Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) awards. The course is designed with flexibility to meet the diverse needs of its students by developing and delivering tailor-made QQI modules. The Skills for Life Programme is designed to support young adults to progress to further education or employment. Students will develop personally and professionally in areas that will support a good quality of life. Students will develop skills and confidence in health and wellbeing, digital skills, team working and IT Skills.

Smart Product Engineering is aimed at those with an interest in the design and development of digital devices and services that they encounter every day.

A novel teaching and learning approach focussed on developing product solutions from the outset is employed whereas existing programmes tend to start with component analysis and building up to system development. This approach has a strong practical focus, producing graduates with the ability to conceive, design, implement, operate and evaluate smart product prototypes. The students will operate with a system engineering perspective while using rapid prototyping to get a real-world understanding of design, production and user-driven constraints in new product development.
