Middle Eastern, Jewish and Islamic Civilisations

Jewish and Islamic Civilisations is the study of their historical origins and cultures, providing students with an insight into the challenges of diversity and multiculturalism in an increasingly globalised world.

Religion

This course explores theories of religion, the monotheistic religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, the religions of Asia and Africa, movements such as New Atheism, New Religious Movements and the interaction between religion and politics, science, or art.

Over the duration of the course, learners will develop the knowledge, skills, and professional behaviours, that are necessary to become compassionate, competent, and committed healthcare professionals. Academic and clinical knowledge and skills will be developed throughout this rewarding course, using inclusive, authentic, learning approaches and simulated learning environments.

The first three years combine learning in university and clinical midwifery practice in the maternity hospitals. The final year will include a 36-week period of internship in midwifery practice. This course will provide you with the knowledge and skills to meet the needs of women and their families in an individualised, culturally sensitive manner.

The focus and philosophy of midwifery in UCD is the promotion of women-centred care. The initial focus of this course is on the foundational knowledge and skills required for midwifery practice. Each year, these will be developed and strengthened through theory and practice. In your final year, you’ll also focus on professional issues.

The Bachelor of Midwifery Science course is a four-year degree programme during which students learn the art and science of midwifery.

The course is provided in partnership with the Health Service Executive (HSE) West. The programme consists of theoretical and clinical modules. The theoretical content aims to provide students with the knowledge necessary to underpin their professional practice. It comprises lectures, seminars, workshops, experiential learning, skills training and reading time.

This course is full-time with practice placements currently in the University of Limerick Hospital Group, and in the maternity services of Waterford Regional Hospital, South Tipperary General Hospital Clonmel and St Luke’s Hospital Kilkenny. You will learn about midwifery based on a wellness model of women-centred care. The course will give you the knowledge and skills of normal midwifery care. It includes the study of physiology, sociology, research, management, law and ethics. A midwife recognises and initiates action when deviations from normal occur. As this course leads to academic and professional qualifications, students will need to put time and effort into study. 

The course is designed to meet all the requirements and standards for Midwifery Education. A broad-based curriculum helps to produce critical, analytical and reflective practitioners capable of functioning in a variety of settings as midwives.

Social Policy

Social Policy entails the study of those social relations shaping human welfare and wellbeing and analysis of the means by which governments achieve citizen’s well-being through the formation of policies, provision of services and responding to social issues and problems. As a course of undergraduate study Social Policy fits with a commitment to advance the cause of a just, pluralistic and sustainable society.

Modern Language

Students combine this subject with a language of their choice

Modern Languages combines advanced language skills with the literature, history and culture of the countries where these languages are spoken. It also focuses on developing critical faculties and cross-cultural awareness.

This degree is for those of you who want to concentrate on at least two modern foreign languages, explore the connections between them, spend a year abroad and graduate with a BA International degree.

This is a three year full-time course designed to train you to work in the areas of biopharmaceutical, biomedical, environmental or food related industries. With further qualifications you could become a science researcher or a secondary school science teacher.

This Specific Purpose Certificate in The Montessori Approach in Contemporary ELC, is a comprehensive training programme at Level 6 on the Irish National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ), specifically designed to equip aspiring educators with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in the field of Early Learning & Care, with a Montessori focus.

This Montessori course offers an exciting curriculum that combines theoretical understanding with practical application, preparing participants to become proficient Montessori Educators.

This programme serves to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the Montessori approach to the education and care of children in early and middle childhood. Students are supported to develop the requisite knowledge(s), values and competencies to work effectively in a range of education and care settings, in line with current legislation, standards and quality frameworks. 

A motor mechanic is responsible for the servicing, maintenance and fault diagnosis of light passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. Motor mechanics carry out routine service procedures as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer, as well as diagnosing and resolving problems with the operation of the mechanical and electrical systems of vehicles. Motor mechanics are also involved in examining and preparing vehicles for the National Car Test (NCT) or the Commercial Vehicle Road Worthiness Test (CVRT).

A Motor Mechanic is a skilled technician who services, diagnoses and resolves technical concerns with light passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. This apprenticeship programme covers a range of key motor mechanic skills and knowledge which are essential in the workplace. The programme consists of 7 phases in total combining a mixture of ‘on the job’ learning and on campus training.

With this four-year apprenticeship, you will become a fully qualified motor mechanic, with a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate Craft – Motor Mechanics.

You may then choose to work as a motor mechanic in the motor industry in a dealership, repair shop or test centres like the NCT.

Many apprentices use their apprenticeship qualification as a platform to launch careers such as engineers, managers, self-employed business owners, technical trainers, instructors, lecturers, teachers amongst others.

With this four-year apprenticeship, you will become a fully qualified motor mechanic, with a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate Craft – Motor Mechanics.

You may then choose to work as a motor mechanic in the motor industry in a dealership, repair shop or test centres like the NCT.
