This one year Law and Criminology course provides students with an introduction to the Irish legal system and general law subjects, with a clear focus on criminology. It is suited to students who wish to progress to a degree in law at third level specifically Criminal Law. This course is designed to help students develop the essential skills and techniques which form the basis for a career in business, public service or the legal industry. It will also enable learners to obtain a general understanding of legal principles and allow them to appreciate the role of the law in their personal and vocational lives. The course is designed to provide the participants with an introduction to Law and is the ideal starting point for anyone considering progressing to third level to study for a law degree or further study in the legal profession.

Pre-University Law and Criminology is a foundation program designed for students interested in pursuing further studies or careers in law, criminology, or related fields such as policing, social work, or forensic science. This course offers an introduction to the fundamental concepts of legal systems, criminal behaviour, and justice practices, equipping learners with theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for academic progression or entry-level roles in these disciplines.

The LLB in Law and Cyber Security is a joint degree between the School of Law and the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering.

Graduates will be equipped with attributes from both legal and computing disciplines. As well as studying the core subjects required to advance in the legal profession, it will also provide a solid basis and understanding of the importance of cyber security which underpins the critical infrastructure of the economic and social life of the nation. Graduates will be able to apply both mathematical and theoretical principles relevant to cyber security and work with and implement systems in the field of cyber security

BCL (Law and French) allows you to study law and French at the same time in a joint honours degree. You can then become a lawyer with specific linguistic skills. Most of our graduates combine these two sets of skills and become lawyers with a unique linguistic ability. They often go on to work abroad in international or EU firms and institutions.  

The Law and French degree programme offers a unique opportunity to study core and specialised legal modules but also the language, culture and political systems of France. Students must undertake an Erasmus year in France, exposing them to the law of that legal system.

The BCL (Law and Irish) degree will introduce you to a variety of diverse and stimulating topics combining the best aspects of a law degree together with study of the Irish language, literature, culture and institutions. It will also develop your analytical and interpretative skills.

Students undertake all of the required modules needed for Law and a full suite of modules in their chosen European language. Graduates of this programme will develop a strong capacity for analytical and critical thinking as well as strong linguistic skills and a keen sense of cultural awareness.

The BCL/Maîtrise is one of two French Law Courses offered by Sutherland School of Law, the other being the BCL (Law with French Law) on the previous page. All students interested in the French Law Courses enter the BCL (Law with French Law) degree in first year. Both degrees offer the exciting opportunity for immersion in two of the world’s major legal systems, the common law and the civil law. A deep knowledge of civil law is invaluable to graduates who choose to pursue careers with organisations of the European Union or have ambitions to work in international law firms.

Law looks at the relationships, interactions and transactions between individuals, government and state at a local, regional, national and international level. With a broad focus and application, the law degree encompasses private and public law alongside wider socio-legal perspectives.

You will study key aspects of the law and develop a wide range of transferable skills, relevant to your future career trajectory.

Law Plus places significant emphasis on the development of practical legal skills including oral and written communication skills, analytical and logical reasoning skills, negotiation, legal research, organisational and teamwork skills, particularly through the lawyering skills modules. The programme is of four years’ duration, of which seven semesters are spent on campus and one on Cooperative Education. In general, the programme consists of three law modules and two elective modules per semester.  

This graduate entry accelerated law degree offers students the opportunity to study, in two years, the courses required to allow them to progress to the next stage of their legal education.

This degree will teach you all about the criminal justice system and the law. The programme allows you to study the core law subjects alongside subjects such as crime, criminology, legal practice, understanding conflict and different perspectives within the criminal justice system from victims to criminals/defendants, as well as support services and lawyers.

Certain areas of law (e.g. competition regulation and intellectual property) are heavily influenced by economic theory. Both degrees offer the exciting opportunity for immersion in two of the world’s major legal systems. Student will learn about the common law system, practised in Ireland and the UK (and in some form, in most of the English-speaking world) and the civil law system which is used throughout Europe.

There’s a natural affinity between the disciplines of law and history. Each is shaped by the other. Important historical events are often interlinked with contemporary legal structures. Legal reform may be prompted by the defining events of the past.

This course allows you to acquire a highly respected degree in law, whilst also pursuing a passion for history and acquiring a deeper understanding of past events that have shaped our current legal system.

The BCL (Law with Irish) course allows undergraduate law students to access a cohesive set of Irish language modules which are relevant to the study and practice of law. This programme offers you the opportunity to acquire a highly respected BCL degree, whilst additionally deepening your competence in the Irish language in the context of law.

Your Irish language communication skills will be developed by the resources provided by a modern multi-media language laboratory (An Teanglann) and the advanced language skills training in Lárionad de Bhaldraithe.

This is a fully integrated programme between Law and Irish.  You will study the Law of Northern Ireland and Ireland while also studying modern language and culture.

The degree includes time spent in summer schools in the Gaeltacht which provides a unique opportunity for linguistic development. Proficiency in an additional language, significantly enhances your employability.

Legal systems express and reflect the prevailing moral, political, social and economic philosophy of the State. Law and philosophy are, therefore, complementary fields of study. An understanding of law is fundamentally enhanced by a deeper knowledge of philosophical theory.
