Nutraceuticals are concentrated compounds obtained from food sources that can provide health benefits, including prevention of disease and health promotion. Examples of nutraceuticals include substances such as Omega 3, antioxidants or probiotics.

This course covers a range of scientific disciplines and new nutraceutical technologies. It aims to produce contemporary food scientists capable of exploiting this growing opportunity in health and wellness.

This programme introduces students to the topical and developing area of nutrition and dietetics. By combining theory and practice (students will be required to attend a Work Placement during the programme) it is aimed to give students broad based, relevant knowledge in this vast area of study.

Throughout the year, you will have the opportunity to meet scientists, researchers, and experts in the area. This generally takes the form of talks, workshops, and field trips.

This course is designed to meet the need for scientists with technical competency in the design, development, production, analysis and upgrading of products that are involved in the maintenance, restoration and promotion of human health and wellbeing.

Graduates will be able to apply their understanding of human nutrition and its role in health and disease to various sectors of the food and health industry and identify and address nutrition-related problems in individuals and populations.

This BSc (Honours) in Nutrition and Health Science course is a unique interfacial degree with an equal emphasis on both nutrition and health science. This course provides an approach to nutrition that is based on the scientific and academic principles of biology, biochemistry, social and public health aspects of human nutrition, as well as encompassing emerging issues such as biotechnology, food sustainability and security. This course develops students, across the disciplines of nutritional science, health promotion, research and practice-based nutrition, to build competencies towards becoming an accredited nutritionist.

The Bachelor of Science (BSc) programme is aimed at students with a strong interest in food, nutrition and food product development as well as students who are interested in developing a diverse range of entrepreneurial skills and business acumen. The BSc seeks to prepare students for the challenges of producing foods safe for human consumption, developing more nutritious, healthier food options for dynamic, ever-changing markets.

The BSc Nutritional Sciences course focuses on the role of diet in health promotion and disease prevention (including problems related to undernutrition and over-nutrition, and especially the major non communicable chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and osteoporosis). This is done from an individual, national and international perspective, using insights gained from a wide range of scientific disciplines.

The BSc in Occupational Health and Safety Management is a multidisciplinary programme that examines the relationship between workplace factors and human health, safety and well-being. Students study subjects including the basic sciences, health sciences, engineering, law, management and regulatory affairs among others.

The programme is designed to meet the needs of industry and provides students with a high-quality qualification in the multidisciplinary area of Occupational Health and Safety Management.

This programme gives students the knowledge and skills to protect workers from injuries and fatalities, prevent illness caused by work, promote health and wellbeing, and advise employers on health and safety law. Students also learn how to prepare, implement and monitor safety management systems in the workplace. The degree provides students with the knowledge and skills to put in place environmental, health and safety in the workplace. This combined with the fact that our graduates will also be qualified to act as trainers.

As an Occupational Therapist you will assist in enabling individuals to do things that enhance their ability to live independently in their daily ‘occupations’. ‘Occupation’ is the term used to describe those tasks and activities essential for daily life – washing, dressing , feeding and moving around, to the more complex areas of working, leisure, socialising and managing finances and home.

The Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy is a four-year degree programme which includes a total of 1000 hours of practice education placement completed at various sites. In the first year of the program you will study anatomy and physiology related to human performance and human development across the lifespan. Later years include modules on occupational therapy services for children and young people, people living with mental health difficulties, musculoskeletal disorders, chronic and neurological conditions and older adults. Students will have opportunities at all stages of the program to develop professional skills including communication and advocacy skills, clinical reasoning skills and skills.

Students on this broad and varied Occupational Therapy course study psychology, anatomy and physiology, as well as occupational therapy theories, assessment and treatment approaches and evidence-based practice.

This course helps students to develop their interpersonal, caring and practice skills which they can apply to a varied range of client groups in a variety of settings. Whilst at the same time understanding the importance of maintaining a client’s independence, dignity, respect, self-esteem and choice.

Students will learn a range of practical skills within the classroom in a simulated healthcare environment using equipment from an occupational therapy setting. This helps to prepare the student to work with the service user/clients on work-placement. Students will gain practical experience in the areas of:

• Assist in the implementation of therapeutic programmes
• Personal care routines
• Working as part of a Occupational Therapy team
