You will study texts ranging from the Old English, medieval and early modern periods to the nineteenth and through to the twenty-first century – writing which extends across national boundaries and regions, from British to Irish to American to World Literature, and covering multiple genres. You will explore literary production, value and impact – how fiction, poetry and drama are inspired, shaped, released and received in particular historical and cultural contexts. You will learn how the meanings of literary texts change and renew across time and space.

It explores why works of art look the way they do and seeks to discover what they say about the societies that created them. If your interest in literature extends to an ambition to write creatively, this degree programme will support that ambition through classes, workshops, and seminars dedicated to the development of your creative talent. In the final year, you will work on – and complete to high standard – a substantial writing project. To help you reach this standard, you will be advised and directed by one of the supervisors on the Creative Writing or English team.

Built around a core of significant authors writing in English from Elizabethan times to the end of the Twentieth Century, from Shakespeare to Seamus Heaney, we provide the opportunity for you to follow your own interests through a wide range of optional modules. Two thirds of the course is made up these: you can, for example, take strands on creative and professional writing, women's writing and gender studies, and American literature; or select from modules on contemporary writing, modern drama, love poetry, film adaptation, or Beat culture, to name just a few.

In your final year, you will be guided by a member of the teaching team and write a dissertation on a topic of your own choice. 

For those interested in a career in teaching, the modules on Education will give you a taste of theory and practice employed in primary and secondary schools as well as colleges. You can also take courses on creative and professional writing to develop your skills as a communicator and raise your game for the jobs market. 

Study English, Drama and Film if you are interested in the relationships between literature, drama, film, and media cultures. Refine your critical engagement with a wide variety of texts and cultures, in different genres and media, and across different national and historical locations.

Consider the role of cultural representation across a diverse range of genres, forms and time periods in shaping community and societal structures and beliefs. Environmental engineering is that branch of engineering concerned with the application of scientific and engineering principles for the protection and improvement of the environmental quality of the world in which we live.

Environmental engineers work on issues of sustainability, provide safe and secure drinking water, collect, treat and properly dispose of wastewater and other wastes, design flood protection measures, maintain or improve air and noise quality, design sustainable urban drainage systems, clean up contaminated land and groundwater, and help communities and industry minimise pollution, among many other activities.

In this course, you’ll study issues such as food safety, environmental pollution, occupational safety and health risk management, and how these should be managed.

This BSc (Hons) Environmental Health programme has great strength in delivering the practical and academic skills required for a career in environmental health including problem solving, communication, research and management skills. It also aims to facilitate the development of your own personal, communication and intellectual abilities.

The course includes the core subjects of food safety management, health and safety at work, environmental protection, housing and public health. The areas of sustainability, quality of life, health inequalities, law and spatial planning are also integrated throughout the programme.

Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary study which examines the interaction between humans and the environment, with specific reference to the effects of modern technological advances.

The degree programme is four years in duration. Early modules are concerned with building up your understanding of science relevant to the environment (biology, ecology, chemistry, computing, mathematics and physics). The basic concepts used in these subjects are applied to specific environmental science applications. Later modules in the programme focus on the areas of environmental management, environmental technology, environmental impact assessment, waste management, sustainability and conservation ecology, environmental monitoring and health & safety.

This full-time one-year programme will be of interest to those wishing to work or pursue further study in Environmental Science. Career areas include waste management, renewable energy, nature conservation, and numerous areas within the environmental sector. The core science modules open up many routes for further study in general science areas as well as other sustainable areas.
