The Bachelor of Nursing Science (General) course is a four-year degree programme provided in partnership with the Health Service Executive (HSE) West, Blackrock Health Galway Clinic, Bon Secours Hospital Galway. The programme consists of theoretical and clinical modules. The theoretical content aims to provide students with the knowledge necessary to underpin their professional practice.

This four-year degree programme integrates theory and practice, preparing our students to be world-class practitioners.

As key members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team and in partnership with patients, general nurses provide for the physical, psychological and social wellbeing of persons with acute or chronic physical illness.

The Bachelor of Science (Hons) in General Nursing, is a four year degree pre-registration course. On completion of the course, graduates will be eligible to register as a General Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) having obtained an university accredited honours degree awarded. The course is offered in conjunction with Sligo University Hospital and other Health Service Executive (HSE) organisations and groups in the Western region.

The aim of this one year full time course is to enable the learner to build the knowledge, skill and competence required for participation in higher education, including acquiring a broad range of knowledge in an area of personal interest, and key skills for academic research and enquiry.

Work placement / work experience may be a core feature/element of programmes in this field facilitating the enhancement of employability and transversal skills.

The BSc Genetics will teach you to understand how genes work in individuals and populations, and how this genetic information is passed from one generation to the next. Our Genetics programme places particular emphasis on the molecular basis of genetics, and our graduates will obtain a strong foundation in modern genetics.

By studying on this programme, you can come to understand the genetic basis for life and how this information can be used to investigate, diagnose and treat diseases. You’ll also gain practical laboratory skills, as well as skills in communications, critical thinking and problem-solving. Furthermore, you’ll gain skills in computational biology, which uses high-tech data analysis and modelling to help harness genetic and biological insights.  

Genetics and Genomics is an exciting area of science involving the study and use of DNA based data in the life sciences. Genetics is the study of how DNA is the blueprint for functionality in every cell and is also the code that passes information from one generation to the next. New sequencing technologies can now generate vast quantities of data from DNA. 

Genomics is the study of these data to make important discoveries in areas such as medicine, agriculture, evolution, the environment and biotechnology.

Geography is the only discipline that combines the study of both the natural and social worlds, and their interaction, and is key to solving global problems such as climate change, poverty, migration, urbanisation and environmental management.

By studying Geography in UCD, you will understand the context in which environmental, socio-cultural and politico-economic decision-making takes place and develop skills that prepare you for the workplaces and societies of tomorrow.

Geography and Geoscience is the study of our planet and the people that live on it. This multi-disciplinary programme is designed by leading research scientists in response to critical challenges facing the Earth system and humanity in the 21st century. It integrates knowledge from the physical, chemical, biological and social sciences to develop novel insights into Earth system function and human-environment interactions. 

There is a growing demand for a work force literate in the scientific and geographic protocols used to advance environmental issues such as climate change, energy use, sustainable development, and policy. This new degree course will allow you to become an expert in many decision-making fields that now rely on a fundamental understanding of how human activities depend upon natural systems, through the interpretation of the scientific, spatial, and economic aspects of geographic principles and processes.

This programme combines the study of the Geography, Landscape and Adventure. Graduates will be empowered to promote careful use and management of an increasingly threatened natural world and to educate others in wise use and sustainable practice.

Graduates will be well placed to manage the different and sometimes conflicting interests between rural land uses such as farming, tourism, outdoor recreation, nature conservation, forestry, and alternative energy solutions.

Computer Science

Students studying Computer Science and Geography may have a particular interest in geographic information systems, spatial data or “smart cities”. The combined study of Computer Science and Linguistics yields opportunities for graduates to specialise in computational speech and language processing or text analysis.
