Students undertaking English and Creative Writing explore literatures in English in the widest possible sense and work with some of the leading writers working in the UK and Ireland. From the earliest writings in Anglo-Saxon to contemporary Irish, British, and 'global' literatures, students study English in its historical, cultural, and material contexts.

The language modules explore the history, structure, and function of English; its day-to-day usage, including in the media; and the major influences that have shaped its development. The creative writing modules allow students on this programme to specialise in prose fiction, poetry, and scriptwriting.

If your interest in literature extends to an ambition to write creatively, this degree programme will support that ambition through classes, workshops, and seminars dedicated to the development of your creative talent. In the final year, you will work on – and complete to high standard – a substantial writing project. To help you reach this standard, you will be advised and directed by one of the supervisors on the Creative Writing or English team.

Built around a core of significant authors writing in English from Elizabethan times to the end of the Twentieth Century, from Shakespeare to Seamus Heaney, we provide the opportunity for you to follow your own interests through a wide range of optional modules. Two thirds of the course is made up these: you can, for example, take strands on creative and professional writing, women's writing and gender studies, and American literature; or select from modules on contemporary writing, modern drama, love poetry, film adaptation, or Beat culture, to name just a few.

In your final year, you will be guided by a member of the teaching team and write a dissertation on a topic of your own choice. 

For those interested in a career in teaching, the modules on Education will give you a taste of theory and practice employed in primary and secondary schools as well as colleges. You can also take courses on creative and professional writing to develop your skills as a communicator and raise your game for the jobs market. 

Study English, Drama and Film if you are interested in the relationships between literature, drama, film, and media cultures. Refine your critical engagement with a wide variety of texts and cultures, in different genres and media, and across different national and historical locations.

Consider the role of cultural representation across a diverse range of genres, forms and time periods in shaping community and societal structures and beliefs. Explore how the study of English, Drama and Film intersects with questions of gender, race, and identity. Become a critical and creative thinker.

Applicants must have completed BIM’s Basic Safety Training Course.

Environmental engineering is that branch of engineering concerned with the application of scientific and engineering principles for the protection and improvement of the environmental quality of the world in which we live.

Environmental engineers work on issues of sustainability, provide safe and secure drinking water, collect, treat and properly dispose of wastewater and other wastes, design flood protection measures, maintain or improve air and noise quality, design sustainable urban drainage systems, clean up contaminated land and groundwater, and help communities and industry minimise pollution, among many other activities.

In this course, you’ll study issues such as food safety, environmental pollution, occupational safety and health risk management, and how these should be managed.

Environmental Science and Engineering is a new integrated undergraduate with postgraduate degree course that aims to train the next generation of graduates who have the competencies, knowledge and experience necessary to design and deploy solutions that protect and improve our environment and human wellbeing, and that work with rather than against the natural world to foster biodiversity, climate action and sustainable use of Earth’s finite resources.

This honours degree offers a unique combination of scientific and instrumentation based modules to train graduates in the skills required to become environmental monitoring specialists, specifically in the areas of air and water quality analysis.
