Medical Science is the science related to medical conditions, their causes, diagnosis and treatment. This course provides multi-disciplinary training and clinical laboratory placement in all Biomedical Science disciplines, so that you may work in any of the following areas in pathology: Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Cytology, Cellular Pathology, Haematology, Medical Microbiology, Molecular Diagnostics, and Transfusion Science.

The intermediate years of the programme will focus on learning about abnormal bodily functions. You will attend a wide array of clinical skills workshops, small group tutorials and case-based teaching sessions. A lot of your time will be spent in a hospital setting attached to clinical teams. RCSI's GEM programme is a four-year accelerated programme. In your first year as a GEM student, you will be taught in a dedicated teaching facility on the main St Stephen’s Green campus.

In your second year, you will spend most of your time in RCSI's dedicated teaching space at Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown, Dublin. In your final two years, you will be on clinical rotations in a variety of hospitals and GP practices in Dublin and throughout the country.

The purpose of mental health nursing is to promote mental health and wellbeing for individuals experiencing mental illness and psychological distress. This includes working collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team to plan, support and deliver individualised nursing care.

The aim of the programme is to provide students with an opportunity to learn the essential knowledge, skills and competencies associated with mental health nursing. Students will develop fundamental nursing skills to enable them to provide care in a variety of healthcare environments. Students who successfully complete this five-year programme will be eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
