You will investigate the foundations of western civilisation in the history, literature, philosophy and culture of the ancient Greeks and Romans, encountering figures such as Homer, Plato, Cicero and Caesar, whose works and achievements have inspired writers, artists, thinkers and politicians down to the present day. In first year Greek and Roman Civilization you will be introduced to the ancient world through the myths of the ancient Greeks and the fall of the Roman Republic.

This is the study of all the essentials of computers and software. All options share a common first year in Computer Studies (plus Mathematics and options to take other subjects) after which students can choose which degree path they wish to pursue. Advanced topics such as computer vision, theoretical computer studies, robotics, cryptography and artificial intelligence may be studied, depending on the pathway students take.

Computer Science is a relatively young field and is showing rapid growth in terms of scientific and technological advancement and in terms of impact on diverse aspects of human existence.

Criminology can be described as the scientific study of crime. Criminologists study the causes of crime and society’s reaction to it.

You will gain perspectives from experts on explanations for criminal behaviour, criminological theory, the operation of the criminal justice system, the psychology of crime, the anthropology of crime, crime and economics and more.

The development of digital and social media has led to profound changes in our cultural practices. Increasingly, our lives are lived through mediated communication, which makes it even more urgent to examine the relationship between culture, media and technology. The pathway in Digital Culture and Communications is designed to address these challenges and to enable graduates to live and work in the digital present and future. Students will undertake modules which enable them to develop media production and media writing and to develop the critical and analytical skills to examine the relationship between communication, technology and culture.

The Drama and Theatre Studies Programme will allow you to acquire a broad knowledge in drama and theatre studies. It will equip you with the critical, analytical and literary skills necessary to analyse live performance and play-texts, and locate them within a socio-cultural context. The programme has a special emphasis on contemporary theatre and on applied drama/theatre.

This degree in Economics relates to every aspect of our lives, from the choices we make to the decisions made by governments and businesses. Economics is a fascinating and challenging subject that is critical to the modern world. Economics provides students with outstanding analytical and problem solving abilities, including numerical and computing ability, as well as enhanced communication and presentation skills.

The Bachelor of Arts (Joint-Honours) Entry has subject groupings.  Students of GY101, Bachelor of Arts (Joint-Honours), study 3 subjects in their first year, from a selection of 24 subjects. A subject belongs to one of 7 groups, and you cannot select more than one subject from a group. On progression to second year, you continue to study two of the subjects to degree level.

Many of the managerial decisions taken in modern business organisations and financial institutions require a good understanding of the global economic environment. Studying economics will develop habits of rigorous thought and practice in clear writing. Besides, it includes the application of quantitative tools, learning to use statistics and to read critically. As Economics majors, students acquire the skills to explain why economic phenomena occur and how economies can improve. The study of economics is an excellent way to acquire problem-solving skills and develop a logical, ordered way of looking at world current affairs.

Economics is the study of people’s motives, expectations, decisions, hopes, disappointments and uncertainties. It can be used to examine a variety of issues, from social media to poverty.

Choosing economics will give you an excellent foundation for a career in business, finance, government, teaching and the media, and for doing further study in business courses such as marketing, management and computing. 

As a student of English, you will learn about different literary forms, the conditions that shape writing, from history and geography to questions of gender, race, and class. You will also learn how literary texts enable us to understand our own complex world, along with Different approaches to and theories of literature, and much more.

In studying English you explore a wide range of literature from the Renaissance, through the to Romantic Poetry and Modern and Postmodern culture. You cover the main literary genres: fiction, drama and poetry.

As part of an Arts degree, this subject is one of three subjects you choose in first year. In second and third year you continue with two of the subjects taken in First Arts. It may be possible to take an extra year studying abroad.

Our English programme enables you to develop critical thinking skills through an appreciation of the wide world of literature in English, and by analysing the social and historical contexts through which that literature emerged. You will learn about the art of writing and shaping narrative by exploring literary genres and history from the 700s on. You choose electives to suit your own interests, in Irish, British, American, and world literatures, and in gender and sexuality studies among other specialist topics.

The BA in English introduces you to the subject in its fullest sense. You will study English across the centuries and can cover areas such as creative writing, film, drama and theatre. English is of central importance as a means of communication in the fields of commerce, media, law, science and technology. Having the ability to speak and write fluently and accurately in English is clearly an asset to anyone who wishes to follow a career in any of these fields. 

The English programme at MIC will enable you to develop critical and analytical skills through an appreciation of the English language and its literature, as well as through the study of the social, cultural and historical contexts in which that literature was produced.

European Studies is a multidisciplinary subject, in which you will explore the processes and consequences of political, diplomatic, administrative and economic decision-making in the European Union. As a European Studies graduate, you will be prepared for the challenges associated with a more interdependent and enlarged EU.

Finance is taught as an application of Economics. It examines the role of government and international organisations in the management and regulation of financial markets. Finance is the study of investment risk and reward.

Folklore at UCC introduces the main areas of the discipline, such as narratives, stories, festivals, rituals, tools, technologies and material culture, before developing the theories, ideas and methods of Folklore, including the theories of fieldwork, original research, archives and community identity.

Over the course of your degree programme, you will receive an excellent grounding in all aspects of French language through core modules in French Grammar, Writing in French, and Translation, while in your second and final years you may choose from a range of optional modules, such as Francophone Politics and Ideas, Womens Writing in French, Introduction to French Cinema and Breton.

French at UCC will not only expand your knowledge and use of the language, it will introduce you to modern French culture and the cultures of French-speaking countries worldwide.

Along with translation, philosophy, visual culture and linguistics, you will study a wide range of topics, including history, literature, music, theatre, politics and the connections France has to other countries.

French Studies can be taken as part of the MIC Arts Degree as a joint honours combination. You will learn about French society, literature and culture as well as improving your language skills. You will use a wide range of materials to aid your study, including textbooks, newspapers, film, radio, TV and internet.
