This is a modern programme that prepares students for a broad range of career choices, some of which may not yet even exist, in the fields of mechanical and manufacturing engineering. Through a combination of theory, practicals, and workshops, students gain up to date knowledge of engineering principals, and learn how to apply these to solve real world problems. Students are also be asked to consider issues such as ethics and sustainability. It addresses the major skills shortage in the manufacturing sector both nationally and internationally. This programme enables students to understand the principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, material sciences, electronics, automation, information technology and computer aided engineering.  

Civil Engineering encompasses all aspects of infrastructure development and is used to improve and protect the environment that we live in. It involves the planning, design and construction of facilities that we require for everyday life such as roads, tunnels, bridges, buildings, offshore oil-platforms, water supply systems, wastewater treatment systems, dams and sustainable energy schemes such as hydroelectric stations and wind farms to name but a few. This programme is a blend of formal lectures, relevant practical classes to enhance understanding of topics and projects to apply the information learnt to typical Civil Engineering applications. 

The quantity surveyor has the responsibility of controlling project cost and are central to the decision-making process throughout the development of a construction project from initial inception to final completion. This programme prepares students for the specialised discipline of quantity surveying and offers graduates a broad skills base for the specialised profession. This programme gives students the necessary knowledge and skills to plan and control costs, and to competently administer construction projects.   

The BSc (Hons) in Construction Project Management and Applied Technology equips graduates with the skills needed to effectively manage project cost, scope and timelines for an ever-changing national and international construction industry. This programme blends traditional practical skills including carpentry and joinery, with modern construction approaches, such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Lean Construction. Graduates develop an appreciation for design/planning on small scale workshop projects right up to Virtual Modelled buildings where collaboration is essential through digital technologies.

This degree includes lots of time spent in computer labs creating programs and solving problems. The aim is to teach students how to use industry standard tools and techniques and then explain the concepts behind them. Creativity, problem solving, persistence and critical thinking are key skills which are developed during the degree. New high-tech computer teaching labs will open at ATU Sligo in 2023 and give students access to the latest advancements in technology.

This degree focuses on the infrastructure that powers the movement of data about the Internet. Students get an in-depth understanding of computer network design, implementation and optimisation through a suite of modules that focus on cutting edge technologies. This includes software defined networks, public, private and hybrid cloud technologies and ethical hacking. The cyber security eco-system has evolved and grown at an exponential rate over the last number of years and is a critical aspect for all sectors of our economy. 

This programme takes into account the specific requirements of the global software industry and what it expects from graduates. The emphasis on the programme is in supplying students with coding and communication skills to enable them to be productive members of a growing worldwide software technology sector. This programme is an general entry science degree that gives students an exceptional level of flexibility. The programme builds a core foundation in key science disciplines in Year 1. This is a good choice for students who know they want to study science but are unsure about their key area at the time of application. Students are given advice during the year to help guide their decisions. Students also get to choose from elective science subjects in Year 1 before selecting a specialised honours degree at the end of that year.

This honours degree equips graduates with the skills to manage our manmade and natural resources. Through a mix of outdoor fieldwork, high-tech laboratory practicals, computer mapping, site visits and classroom learning and activities, students gain a range of skills to thrive in this increasingly important industry. Assessments are planned to develop skills that employers value highly. This includes scientific report writing, presentations, group work and practical skills. Students have the option to study abroad with our partner university in Sweden. There is also an option to take part in a two-week international summer school in the Netherlands or Sweden.   

This programme gives students the knowledge and skills to protect workers from injuries and fatalities, prevent illness caused by work, promote health and wellbeing, and advise employers on health and safety law. Students also learn how to prepare, implement and monitor safety management systems in the workplace. The degree provides students with the knowledge and skills to put in place environmental, health and safety in the workplace. This combined with the fact that our graduates will also be qualified to act as trainers.

Pharmaceutical Science combines a range of scientific subjects that are vital in the development, discovery, processing and manufacturing of different drugs and therapies. The overall philosophy of this degree is to produce science graduates who can assume positions of responsibility in the area of pharmaceutical science.

This degree provides students with a broad but thorough background in the chemical, biological, and technological disciplines as they relate to the study of medicinal products. It allows students to develop a range of skills, covering scientific, engineering, regulatory and quality issues, as well as delivering excellent communication skills. Modules are based around the core pharmaceutical sciences, but with emphasis also placed on modern technology and advances within the sector.

Biomedical Science is the study and application of biological systems for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. This degree gives students access to the latest industry innovations and advancements, teaching them skills needed to gain employment in the biotechnology, biopharmaceutical, diagnostics and medical device industries in Ireland and abroad. Innovative teaching methods are used on the programme, including the use of social networking, game-based learning, industrial workshops and visits to target industries and employers. We also recognise the importance of transferable skills such as data presentation, information-sourcing and scientific-technical writing which enhances employability, and expands students knowledge and understanding of the sector. 

This degree equips graduates with skills in both forensic and analytical science making them highly employable in a broad range of sectors. Students study both biology and chemistry through the exciting and stimulating medium of forensic science. A major focus of the programme is the development of excellent practical analytical science skills which are in great demand by employers and for postgraduate research.

This programme aims to produce graduates with a strong academic base in health science disciplines related to physical activity and exercise. Students will graduate with a thorough understanding of health sciences and their application. Emphasis is placed on developing core health-related skills and competencies. The degree is comprised of a number of inter-related subject streams including health promotion and public health, physical activity, exercise physiology, nutrition sciences, and research methods. Core modules are complemented by supporting modules in IT and communications. Students are equipped with a unique blend of practical skills and knowledge in a broad range of health-related fields.   

Human Nutrition in ATU Sligo combines a number of scientific disciplines to provide a thorough understanding of the role of diet and nutrition in health and in the prevention of major diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and osteoporosis. The degree gives students a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between diet and health. Students learn how to apply this knowledge to individual and population health, as well as providing safe and nutritious food to the consumer.

The aim of this programme is to allow students to gain the required qualification, skills and competencies to enter the healthcare work force as a Clinical Measurement Physiologist. These healthcare professionals perform diagnostics tests for patients, reporting and acting on the outcomes and being part of the interdisciplinary team treating patients. This degree was developed in collaboration with the professional body for Clinical Measurement Physiologists, the Irish Institute of Clinical Measurement Physiology.

The ATU MPharm will deliver a programme of pharmacy education and training which meets all the requirements set out in pharmacy law, allowing the student to develop all the competencies necessary to become registered to practise as a pharmacist in Ireland.

Over the five years, students will have the opportunity to learn from and alongside pharmacists, clinicians, patients and other leading experts from a variety of fields, as well as undertaking structured work placements across the spectrum of pharmacy and healthcare practice.

The study of education is undertaken concurrently with study in the subject discipline Home Economics in each of the four years of the programme. School placement is a key feature of the programme and students undertake a school-based placement each year.

The Bachelor of Science (BSc) programme is aimed at students with a strong interest in food, nutrition and food product development as well as students who are interested in developing a diverse range of entrepreneurial skills and business acumen. The BSc seeks to prepare students for the challenges of producing foods safe for human consumption, developing more nutritious, healthier food options for dynamic, ever-changing markets.

St. Angela’s College has an international reputation and an established record of excellence in Home Economics education. The role of a Home Economist in communities is very much established in other European and International countries. This level 8, four year degree (which is not an initial teacher education qualification) fulfils the gap that is currently demanded and required within Irish society. It is designed to attract applicants who are passionate about Home Economics and aspire to be Home Economists advocating for sustainable health and wellbeing of individuals, families and communities.

The Bachelor of Science (Hons) in General Nursing, is a four year degree pre-registration course. On completion of the course, graduates will be eligible to register as a General Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) having obtained an university accredited honours degree awarded. The course is offered in conjunction with Sligo University Hospital and other Health Service Executive (HSE) organisations and groups in the Western region.
