You’ll gain an excellent foundation in genetics, cell biology, immunology, microbiology, bioinformatics and bioprocess engineering, as well as practical laboratory skills and invaluable skills in communications, critical thinking and problem solving. In your final year, you’ll decide to take focus either on research or on learning more about the biopharmaceutical industry.

Calling maths lovers! If you’d like to be able to fix a gaming remote or build a smart doorbell from scratch, you need to study Electronic and Computer Engineering.

Across the first three years, you’ll study the fundamentals of electronic engineering and programming. As this course covers a broad field, you’ll choose one of four specialisms in fourth year: Systems and Devices (covering sensors, diagnostics and more), High-Speed Networks (such as fibre optics and 5G), Digital Interaction (including 3D interfaces and game design), and the Internet of Things.

This course all about how we build intelligent machines through the meeting of mechanical systems such as engines and machines with the electronics needed to control them.

This course perfectly blends mechanical engineering and electronic engineering. It offers classes in 3D modelling and design, for example, as well as circuit design and programming. Our students and staff are intrigued and inspired by the interplay between electronics and moving parts in connected devices and state-of-the-art machinery.

Gain knowledge for the real world
In third year, you’ll get to do a six-month INTRA work placement and throughout the course, you’ll do lots of project-based learning where you use the latest real-world tools and technologies to solve problems and, of course, build robots. That’s not all. You’ll also take some business-based modules, so you can learn how to develop a business plan and work with other parts of an enterprise.

While you can go on from this course to work in either mechanical or electronic engineering, our graduates typically end up in roles where they incorporate one into the other. For example, they might put sensors into a machine to measure aspects of how it’s working or develop control systems for a lift or a car. Either way, mechatronics graduates are in huge demand.

Transitioning to zero carbon is one of the biggest challenges faced by humanity. Students who do this innovative programme will be ready to tackle the huge challenges thrown up by climate change, while also being mindful of the environmental impact of any engineering work they do.

This programme merges practical engineering with theory. It provides rigorous engineering training and will be accredited by Engineers Ireland, but it also encompasses extensive learning around climate and sustainability issues. If you care deeply about the environment, but would also like to finish university as a mechanical engineer with additional skills in sustainability, this is the perfect course for you.

Can you imagine designing and building a better electric vehicle, jet engine or wind turbine? Maybe you’ve figured out a way to improve inhalers or door handles. If you’re fascinated by how things work and are made, enjoy getting caught up in the details, and thrive as part of a team, choose Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering.

Our students take things apart, figure out how they work and how to fix or improve them, then put them back together again. You’ll get to use 3D printers and other advanced tools in DCU’s state-of-the-art labs, while also absorbing engineering theory. It is at heart a maths-based course, but you’ll also gain extensive skills and knowledge in engineering mechanics, computer simulation and analysis, design and manufacture, and project management.

In third year, you’ll do an eight-month work placement in industry and you also have the opportunity to study abroad. And you can extend your undergraduate BEng programme by a year to complete a masters degree.

When you study Biomedical Engineering, you not only learn how the body works and becomes injured, but you come to understand how medical devices are developed to treat injuries and disease, and how we can help the body heal itself.

You’ll use state-of-the-art labs and tools such as 3D simulations and machine learning as you study. You’ll get biological and medical knowledge, and technical engineering expertise, so you can solve problems in biomedicine. You’ll study advanced biology, biomaterials, biomechanics, tissue engineering, medical device design, surgical technology, rehabilitation engineering and much more besides. 

Engineers can be found in many fields from high-tech industry and medicine to financial services, energy aware technologies and biotechnology. If unsure of which strand of engineering is for you this course helps you to choose while studying the fundamentals of engineering. 

You’ll spend first year building a strong engineering foundation across maths, materials engineering and basic sciences, while also building skills like logical and critical thinking.

The Athletic Therapy and Training programme will equip you with skills in preventing, assessing, treating and rehabilitating injuries associated with physical activity, including those experienced by elite athletes.

Incorporating multiple work placements, this course gives you extensive theoretical knowledge of how the body works and then shows you how to apply that expertise. It is an intensive, highly practical programme that immerses students in musculoskeletal medicine from an early stage.

Practical experience at home and abroad:
You’ll learn how to assess, treat and rehabilitate in theory and, from second year, in real-world settings. You’ll complete placements in sports medicine clinics and rehabilitation clinics, as well as undertaking pitchside and team placements. In your final year, you’ll do a semester-long immersive placement, which could be in an athletic therapy clinic or a professional sports team. These placements may be completed in Ireland but most students go to the US, Canada, Australia or Britain.

This course is accredited by Athletic Rehabilitation Therapy Ireland. When you graduate, you’ll be eligible to become a certified Athletics Therapist. As an independent, highly skilled clinician with a wealth of experience, you’ll be highly sought after in sports medicine, by musculoskeletal clinics or with a sports team, or you can go on to work as a researcher in musculoskeletal medicine.

While psychologists differ in their interests and the type of work they do, they all approach the study of behaviour in a scientific way. During the course, you’ll gain knowledge, skills and experience in all core areas in psychology. With a maximum of 40 students in each year group, you’ll benefit from access to academic staff and support as you need it.

This course has been designed to enable you to discover all the aspects of health issues, and learn how to understand, research and act to improve the health of populations. 

During the course, you’ll encounter many different ways of thinking about and acting on health issues, including biological, social, political, ethical and psychological perspectives. You’ll not only learn about different potential career paths, but you’ll also get to focus many projects and other programme activities on your own health interests.

As a Health and Society student, you’ll participate in a voluntary community project in your first year, then go on to design and implement a health equity campaign in second year. In your final year, you’ll complete a health research project and write your final dissertation.

Once you’ve completed the programme, you could go on to work in a state or voluntary health or social agency, or go to work in overseas development. In this speciality field, intellectual disability nurses work as part of a cross-disciplinary team that strives to enable and empower people with intellectual disabilities to achieve their full potential.

Intellectual disability can affect two aspects of people’s lives – their intellectual functioning (such as learning, problem solving, judgement) and their adaptive functioning (in activities of daily life such as communication and independent living). During this course, you’ll come to develop the  professional knowledge, skills and attitudes you’ll need to care for people with intellectual disability.

Nurses are problem-solvers with a natural tendency to care about how people feel and usually have qualities such as resilience, empathy, reliability, integrity and good communication skills are leading qualities in the nursing field.

Nurses play a critical role in society, helping people to achieve, maintain or regain the best possible health while also offering patients support and dignity. During this course, you’ll develop deep nursing knowledge, along with skills such as critical thinking, reflective practice, research principles and problem-based learning. You’ll learn how to ensure the care you deliver as a compassionate and committed nurse is current and evidence-based.

Are you interested in how societies work? DCU’s Economics, Politics and Law (EPL) degree course is designed to give you a deep and thorough understanding of the political, legal and economic forces that shape the world.

Build strong foundations
This degree provides a solid base to all three disciplines and you will study foundational topics such as introductions to micro and macroeconomics, political science and constitutional law. You don’t need to have done any of these before. You can complete the BA in Economics, Politics and Law degree in three years, or choose to take an extra year either to study abroad or complete an INTRA placement.

By the end of this unique and innovative course, you will have learned about international politics, development and regional studies from a global perspective to equip you for careers working with international organisations, institutions and NGOs. 

The BCL degree focuses on experiential learning and developing practical legal skills while also providing you with opportunities to engage with industry and the wider legal profession. In particular, the Moot Court module gives you the chance to practise your court-room skills and gain a real insight into law in action.
