This course is a fulltime, one year advanced course for students wishing to progress into careers in the horticultural sector. It provides education and training for people who wish to pursue a career in commercial or amenity horticulture. It is delivered over a 32 week period, consisting of either 24 or 16 weeks of College based course work, and 8 or 16 weeks of a practical learning period (PLP) depending on the chosen stream.

The course is suitable for those:

• Seeking employment as surpervisors, technicians, unit managers
• Seeking employment in the horticultural business service sector
• Transferring to Year 2 of the BSc Horticulture offered by Waterford IT

The course will be offered in four main streams of learning: Food Production, Nursery Production, Landscaping and Sports Turf depending on student demand. Students complete one of the four streams.

Students will spend 16 weeks of practical learning on approved horticultural units within the industry directly linked to their chosen learning stream. This will enable students to learn the management and manual skills associated with their chosen specialism.

Sixteen weeks are also spent at the College. The emphasis during this course is both on the development of business and management skills and also on developing proficiency in a range of skills associated their chosen stream of learning.

Students who successfully complete this programme are awarded the QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Horticulture. This meets the training requirements for Stamp Duty Exemption and DAFM Schemes.

The general aim of this course is to provide students with a proficient practical knowledge and understanding of horticulture practice at a supervisory level.

This is a part-time course that leads to Horticulture QQI Level 6 award 6M4334 and must be completed over 2 academic years. Students take 3 modules in year 1 and other 3 modules in year 2. The course always runs every Wednesday and Thursday during the academic year and the summer months are then used to complete the 220 hours work placement that is specific to the module choice.

The course runs over 24 weeks from September to June and includes a 12 week Practical Learning Period. Practical skills in the forest and classroom theory are spread out in three week blocks over the academic year.

The Level 6 Certificate in Forestry course provides a viable option for those who want to obtain a recognised qualification and specialised skills awards. This course is designed to provide students with the opportunity to further develop the range of skills completed at level 5 for a career in the fitness and leisure industry as well as providing learners with the expertise to work on a one-to-one basis as an advanced Personal Trainer OR Sports Massage Therapist.

This course offers holders of a Level 5 health-related award the opportunity to undertake further study in this area. This award will equip the learner with the necessary knowledge, skills and competence to undertake supervisory roles in the caring environment.

It also offers a sound introduction to management in the health services for those wishing to build upon their experience and to gain a formal qualification in management.

This course will facilitate the learner to explore supervisory roles within the Health Service with a view to reskilling/up-skilling and exploring concepts and subject areas required for future employment. Learners will gain the knowledge and skills to apply a range of supervisory management concepts, theories and techniques to a supervisory management role in the provision of health services.

This course is modular with continuous assessment over the two years. Students will develop medical knowledge to recognise common illnesses and communication skills to liase with pharmacists and council patients on healthcare issues.

Students will gain experience in dispensing procedures and practices and be able to interpret prescriptions and prepare medicines for dispensing. They will be able to maintain patient records and operate pharmacy computer systems. They will also be able to supply non-prescription medicines in accordance with legislation and guidelines.

This course is suitable for those who wish to use advanced business and IT skills to maximise their employability in a twenty-first century work environment or who wish to progress to higher level studies. Emphasising hands-on learning, the programme provides real-world scenarios for students to apply their knowledge. This course is designed to allow the learner gain advanced knowledge and skills in the general area of office management and leadership. The course aims to build on the solid foundation provided on completion of the Level 5 Administration Award with the addition of Business Law and Human Resource Management. Students also benefit from Payroll training, which places them in an excellent position to take up more senior administration roles in both the public and private sectors.
