As part of the Electrical Apprenticeship Training Programme, learners will complete Phase 2 of their training programme in Monaghan Institute. This Phase of training includes installation, commissioning, testing and maintenance of various wiring systems and services in domestic, comercial and industrial applications.

When choosing a career as an electrician it opens a range of career and specialty paths from being self-employed or working as part of a larger business. In the electrical industry many electricians choose a specialty that they focus on whether it is building and construction, green energy/solar, automation, manufacturing, mining, energy or water supply industries.

This apprenticeship consists of four on-the-job phases with an approved employer and three off-the-job phases in an educational organisation. Apprentices will be invited to attend their off-the-job training phases in accordance with the SOLAS scheduling system.

On completion of this four-year apprenticeship, you will become a fully qualified carpenter and joiner, with a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate Craft – Carpentry and Joinery.

You will go on to be employed in the construction industry on building sites, in a joinery shop or in maintenance and other areas like renovating buildings, shopfitting, exhibition/display work.

Many craftspersons use their qualification as a platform to launch careers such as managers, owners of businesses and instructors amongst others.

This new advanced certificate course is designed to provide the necessary skills to meet this need. Focusing on a higher level of IT specialist skills in the area of network design, installation, configuration and administration, as well as how they can be applied in modern technologies.

The nature of computer networking demands that network specialists are problem solvers with excellent attention to detail. Suitably qualified graduates may apply via the CAO onto an undergraduate degree programme in a range of third level institutions.

The Computer and Network Technician (Year 2) course provides comprehensive coverage of networking topics, from fundamentals to advanced applications and services, with opportunities for hands-on practical experience and career skills development.

The two year Computer and Network Technician programme is closely aligned to the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) professional qualification. This is a global qualification recognised by the IT industry. Students who complete the two years will have gained a strong foundation to progress to full CCNA certification. This course provides advanced training on computer systems and networking technology. Students with suitable qualifications can apply for this Level 6 award or progress from the Networking Technician level 5 course.

This course covers contemporary areas of Computer Networking and Information Security. Networking trains the student in all aspects of networks from Ethernet to Internet Protocol through to the configuration of Cisco network routers.

Information Security involves the securing of desktop computers and Networks from cyber attack, using current best practice to install and configure firewalls, Intrusion Detections Systems and anti malware software. The course also covers auditing and forensics.

Participants will build on their existing knowledge of software development. The main programming languages taught are Java and Visual Basic (VB). On this course, Java is used mainly to build mobile apps for the Android platform whereas Visual Basic is used to teach Graphical User Interface (GUI) programming.
