Biotechnology is the application of biology for the benefit of humanity and the environment. It harnesses living organisms to provide foods and medicines, and for tasks such as cleaning toxic waste or detecting harmful substances. Biotechnology has roots in food and agriculture, using yeast to make beer and bread, and lactic acid bacteria to make cheese.

Modern technologies such as genetic engineering make biotechnology a major part of Ireland’s economic future in biopharmaceuticals, biomedicine, agriculture, the food industry and the environment.

Biomedical Science is the study of Life Science subjects related to human health and disease. Students will learn about the structure and function of the human body from the level of organs and tissues to the molecular level, as well as how drugs are used to treat disease. You will major in one of the following biomedical science subjects: Anatomy, Biochemistry, Pharmacology or Physiology.

The programme provides a solid foundation in Science subjects in the first year, with module offerings in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Mathematical Studies, Computing and Applied Mathematics.

The BComm in International Hotel Management at Shannon College incorporates a full Commerce Degree with an emphasis on hospitality, tourism and the development of communication and leadership skills. Students have the opportunity to study on two universities campuses and experience 21 months of paid international work placement as part of this exciting degree programme.

Commerce with Gaeilge allows students to further their language skills, study in the Gaeltacht for a semester, undertake work experience and learn about all aspects of business. It is the students who want to build a career in business while also further their knowledge of the Irish language.  

All business subjects are taught through English.  In third year students will spend one semester on work placement in an Irish language medium company or organisation. In year three students will study in Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge at NUI Galway's campus in An Cheathrú Rua.

The BA Global Media is an exciting new programme being launched by University of Galway in 2021. This is a degree course allows you to combine the study of mathematics with computer science and post-primary teaching education. This is a four year concurrent initial teacher education programme and includes a number of school placement opportunities throughout the course. The BA in Music at the University of Galway is Ireland’s newest undergraduate music degree. The Bachelor of Arts (Global Experience). Entry has subject groupings.  Students of GY129, Bachelor of Arts (Global Experience), study 3 subjects in their first year, from a selection of 21 subjects. A subject belongs to one of 7 groups, and you cannot select more than one subject from a group. On progression to second year, you continue to study two of the subjects to degree level.
