The Joint Honours Programme in History and International Relations provides students with an intellectual training in disciplines that are complementary and mutually enriching. The programme enables students to appreciate how historical events shape modern politics and how such themes are to be understood and explained through insights into political analysis (e.g. political theory, political institutions, international relations).

It offers students the opportunity to analyse country-based developments across the globe and pays specific attention to the histories and politics of Africa, Europe and the Americas.

The programme provides students with an intellectual training in the disciplines of History and Philosophy, which are mutually enriching subjects. Its key premise is that understanding the present (and anticipating the future) requires the ability to study and interpret the past and to appreciate how the tools of historical inquiry and the insights of philosophical theory combine to illuminate human societies, including those of the contemporary world.

Historians seek to understand the world around us by analysing the past.

Sociology is a scientific discipline concerned with the explanation of social life and human behaviour of all kinds.

History explains the modern world by tracking phenomena like gender, race, class, religion, the state, empire, or capitalism back through time.

By studying History and Spanish, students can analyse a wide variety of literary, historical, social, cultural and linguistic aspects of Spanish-speaking countries across the globe.

All students follow modules in Spanish language which are of a broadly communicative nature, focusing on contemporary Spanish/Hispanic social and cultural issues and drawing on authentic materials. The degree takes four years to complete (which includes the study abroad year).

The degree explores the relationship between the theory and practice of Drama and Theatre to discover how and why they work. The strong developmental emphasis of the courses requires a particular blend of practical and academic skills. Philosophy

This course offers the opportunity to engage in depth with questions of metaphysics (about the fundamental nature of reality), epistemology (the theory of knowledge), ethics (theories of right and wrong), political philosophy (the nature of the just state), philosophy of religion (reasoning about God), philosophy of mind (questions about thought, language and reason) and various other areas. 

History at Ulster will stimulate your intellectual curiosity and challenge you to think critically about the world around you. You will develop a wide range of written, verbal, and analytical skills through the study of the historical processes that have shaped modern society. You will explore topics such as Film and the Vietnam War, Witchcraft and Magic, the Russian Revolution, United States' Foreign Policy and many more.

If you are interested in teaching as a career you may decide to add Education to your degree ‘mix’ at undergraduate level before applying for a Postgraduate Certificate in Education after you have completed your degree. Each Education module usually involves a two hour lecture plus a one hour seminar each week. In addition, you will have the opportunity for undertaking directed independent learning, which will enhance your potential for self-motivated study.

A range of modules covering medieval and modern periods, including Irish, European, and American history, as well as some modules exploring the skills and methods which historians use, and the kinds of debates in which historians engage.

There is the opportunity to concentrate on those parts of history which interest you most, and above all in the final year dissertation, an independent research project which very many students find the most rewarding part of their whole degree programme.

Political Science

Political Science will appeal to students who are excited about exploring the background to current events, the nature and use of power and how decisions are made that impact on wider society. If you are interested in having an in-depth knowledge of public affairs, developing critical and much sought after research skills and if your career interests lie in journalism, public service, teaching, public policy, international organisation and/or business then Political Science may be for you

Religion

This course offers you a choice of three possible directions of study after your first year. The first is a broad-based study of Religion and Theology, the second a specialisation in the Cultural Study of Religion, and the third in Christian Theology. Within the Cultural Study of Religion, you have the opportunity to explore the monotheistic religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, the religions of Asia and Africa, as well new atheistic and religious movements.

If you choose to specialise in Theology, you can investigate the development of Christian self-understanding in a number of different modes, including denominational, multidenominational and ecumenical aspects.
