The Language and Linguistics course aims to give students foundational knowledge of the areas of linguistic theory and its applications. These areas include phonetics, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, historical linguistics, language acquisitionand discourse analysis. Primary teaching methods involve a mix of lectures and seminars both of which are heavily centred around working with examples of language data. In addition, a central element of a linguistics programme is the experience of independently collecting and analysing data and we aim to develop this skill in our students from the very first semester of the degree.

We have designed our course to give you the flexibility to undertake a pathway which best suits your needs, so Language & Linguistics can be studied in conjunction with Counselling Studies. This allows you to combine your interest in language with the study of a vocational area in which effective use of language is central.

The aim of the programme is to educate teachers and equip them with the skills and aptitudes for a successful career as a languages teacher. Graduates from the programme will be qualified to teach their chosen languages at both Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate level.

This course is designed for students who are seeking a high level of language and intercultural competency by developing effective communication and analytical skills. The programme takes a holistic approach to language by fostering linguistics, alongside literary and cultural approaches. Students can choose from Irish, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Latin and Ancient Greek. Modules are available in Portuguese and Welsh.

This three year honours degree in Law and Business is the only such programme in this field available within the northwest and midland region. The four-year Bachelor of Civil Law (Criminology and Criminal Justice)is a unique degree offering in Ireland for students with an interest in both law and the fields of criminology and criminal justice. 

Students have the opportunity to combine the study of a full undergraduate law degree with an additional specialisation that focuses on the causes of crime and the operation of the criminal justice system. The Bachelor of Laws (LLB) with a language combines a full Irish law degree with the study of the law, language and culture of one of three European countries: France, Germany or Spain. Students learn about legal rules and systems, why they exist, how they have developed and how they relate to social and economic goals. Whilst the focus is on Irish law, students will obtain a grounding in the law and legal system of one other European country.
