In UL the focus is on applied Mathematical sciences, where  Mathematics and Statistics are used to solve problems that arise in science, engineering, industry, finance or society. Applied mathematical and statistical modelling is a philosophy of asking, and trying to understand, how things work. A problem or phenomenon of some sort occurs and Mathematics and Statistics are used to explain, to understand and ideally to improve it. 

In the first semester, you will study calculus, linear algebra and computer programming and can choose from a selection of other modules, including physics and economics, before deciding whether to pursue a degree in. Mathematical Sciences, Mathematics and Physics; or Economics and Mathematical Sciences.

Mathematics has long played a central role in our quest to fully describe and understand the natural world. Nowadays, it is also a vital tool in many of the social sciences. Those who concentrate on this subject will gain an understanding of mathematical concepts and learn how to prove key facts and solve problems using deductive reasoning.

This degree, with a specialism in teaching Mathematics and Computer Science, is designed to produce graduates with the mathematical knowledge and skills to satisfy the needs of Irish Second-level schools in teaching the Maths curriculum. Graduates will also be qualified to teach the new Leaving Certificate Computer Science curriculum, as well as short courses in coding and digital literacy for junior cycle.

The course builds strong foundational knowledge in the areas of Mathematics, Statistics and Programming. Well-rounded computing skills are developed allowing students to focus in on high-tech areas within the data and computing domains.

Mathematical Sciences encompasses most areas of mathematics and statistics. In this course, you’ll acquire high-calibre analytical, problem-solving skills and the ability to apply a broad range of mathematical techniques and rigour to countless applications and industries.

This course offers the opportunity to engage in depth with questions of metaphysics (about the fundamental nature of reality), epistemology (the theory of knowledge), ethics (theories of right and wrong), political philosophy (the nature of the just state), philosophy of religion (reasoning about God), philosophy of mind (questions about thought, language and reason) and various other areas.

If you’re fascinated by how things work and are made, enjoy getting caught up in the details, and thrive as part of a team, choose Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering.

Our students take things apart, figure out how they work and how to fix or improve them, then put them back together again. You’ll get to use 3D printers and other advanced tools in DCU’s state-of-the-art labs, while also absorbing engineering theory. It is at heart a maths-based course, but you’ll also gain extensive skills and knowledge in engineering mechanics, computer simulation and analysis, design and manufacture, and project management.

In third year, you’ll do an eight-month work placement in industry and you also have the opportunity to study abroad. And you can extend your undergraduate BEng programme by a year to complete a masters degree.

This is a broad area focusing on the design and development of products and processes.  Mechanical engineering has a strong product and equipment design element, while manufacturing engineering analyses the processes and systems required to produce goods.

Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering is a blended degree that brings in the best of manufacturing and mechanical engineering, culminating in flexible and adaptable engineers to meet industry needs. The REEdI student engineer will learn about the design and development of processes whilst also gaining an equally strong knowledge of the design, development and operation of products and equipment.

Mechanical and Manufacturing engineering concentrates on the design and manufacture of machines, from the smallest parts to large systems, covering industries as diverse as automotive, aerospace and medical. So if you have ever wondered how you can make an F1 racing car go faster or how we can design and build the next generation of space exploration, then mechanical and manufacturing engineering is for you.

This 4 Year BEng Hons course is offered at the Magee campus has been designed with industry leaders to address the future needs of industry. It places an emphasis on individual and team projects, providing the opportunity for hands-on involvement and an understanding of engineering materials, processes, devices and systems. Analytical and communication skills are developed with an emphasis on computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacture (CAM). The skills and knowledge acquired are applied to a wide range of real-life engineering problems. This course has been designed with industry leaders to address the future needs of industry and the research community. The engineering facilities and equipment at Magee are of the highest standard, creating a great learning environment.

Transitioning to zero carbon is one of the biggest challenges faced by humanity. Students who do this innovative programme will be ready to tackle the huge challenges thrown up by climate change, while also being mindful of the environmental impact of any engineering work they do.

This programme merges practical engineering with theory. It provides rigorous engineering training and will be accredited by Engineers Ireland, but it also encompasses extensive learning around climate and sustainability issues. If you care deeply about the environment, but would also like to finish university as a mechanical engineer with additional skills in sustainability, this is the perfect course for you.

A mechanical automation and maintenance fitter will be involved in plant and machinery installation; maintenance and repairs; replacement of broken or working parts; adjustment; servicing and checking components; and equipment component replacement. A fitter will also fabricate parts using machine tools.

On completion of this four-year apprenticeship, you will become a fully qualified mechanical automation and maintenance fitter, with a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate Craft - Mechanical Automation and Maintenance Fitting.

You may then choose to work as a mechanical automation and maintenance fitter in industries such as engineering, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, quarries, mines, food processing, local authorities, petrochemicals and the armed forces.

Many apprentices use their qualification as a platform to launch careers such as engineers, managers, owners of businesses and instructors amongst others.

A craft apprenticeship for those who wish to work as a Mechanical Automotive Maintenance Fitter (MAMF). The work of the Mechanical Automotive Maintenance Fitter (MAMF) involves plant and machinery installation, maintenance and replacement of broken or worn parts, adjustment and servicing.

This course has a strong emphasis on the practical side of mechanical engineering, exposing the student to many “hands on” modules in workshops and laboratories. Modules on the course are grouped into streams that run over the three years: Workshop Practice, Mechatronics, Mechanical Design and Computer Aided Engineering, Mechanics, Thermofluids, Materials, Management, Projects, Mathematics and Elective Options. 

Design and project work is a major feature of the course. The Innovative Project Development modules in Year 3 enable students, working in teams, to bring a concept from the idea stage through to a finished prototype, considering the technical performance and commercial potential of their designs.

There is a mixture of continuous assessment and a series of semesterised exams. In the final year each student undertakes an individual project involving research, design, prototype development and experimental verification to meet a real need.

This course will allow students to test the limits of what is possible with maths and creativity and give them the skills and competencies that will allow you to contribute to local and international industry. Course topics include mechanics, fluids, heat, mathematics, materials, manufacturing, and computer-aided design.

Engineering graduates are trained to be creative and inventive, and to solve difficult problems such as the development of new technologies from jet engines to robots to artificial hip implants to hybrid cars and train components.

Mechanical Engineering is a subject concerned with the design and manufacture of parts and systems that make up the range of machinery and equipment you see around you, from a can opener to a jet aircraft. Mechanical engineers design the tools and processes necessary to create all man-made products, and are often involved from conceiving of an idea right through to seeing it as a finished product ready for its commercial application.
