The world-wide demand for the talents of Irish-trained musicians has never been more apparent. Alongside the iPod generation of musicians there is a strong desire for the talents of both classical and traditional vocalists and musicians. The Bachelor of Music full-time degree programme is designed to educate music students to a professional level as performers (both classical and Irish traditional). It also prepares students for careers as instrumental or vocal teachers, as composers and musicology graduates.

All students are given the opportunity to showcase their talents by participating in a diverse programme of concerts, recitals and stage performances.

This four-year programme places a major emphasis on performance combined with supporting academic study. Areas studied include composition techniques; history of music; aural training; an introduction to education studies; music technology; supporting musicianship. In years three and four, students choose a strand which enables them to concentrate on one of the following: Performance, Composition, Pedagogy, Irish Traditional Music or Musicology.

Participation in ensembles is a core element in the programme. Ensembles include Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Choral Society, Chamber Choir, Opera Ensemble, Irish Traditional Music Ensemble, Big Band and Early Music Ensemble.

This course introduces students to a wide variety of music fields including: Irish traditional music, ethnomusicology, jazz and popular music, music therapy and the classical repertoire.

Students are encouraged to develop their performance skills, to take tuition to an advanced level with their chosen instrument and to take an active part in one of the Department's vocal or instrumental ensembles.

Studying music will allow you to engage with a range of traditions to acquire a profound understanding of how music works in theory and in creative practice.

The BA (Hons) in Music is a four year full-time degree which aims to give the student a well-rounded third level music education. The course offers a balance between practical and theoretical modules within the context of the principal music genres (classical, Irish traditional, jazz and popular). This diversity will serve the student well both in the current job market and in pursuing postgraduate study opportunities.

The aim of this one year full time course is to provide the learner with the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, skill and competence to work independently and under supervision as a practitioner in the music industry and or to progress to further and or higher education and training. The programme focuses on music technology and radio production.

The undergraduate music degree programme at the School of Arts and Humanities at Ulster University is based around four core elements: Performance, Composition, Musicology and Music Technology.

Year 1 is designed to provide students with a comprehensive overview of musical styles, genres and disciplines enabling them to develop existing skills and interests as well as acquire a range of new ones. Note: All year 1 modules are compulsory for BMus students.

Year 2 allows students the opportunity to begin specialising by introducing a number of optional modules as well as level 2 modules in the four core disciplines.

Year 3 enables students to focus their degree programme in one or more related areas of specialist interest with a broad range of advanced level modules. Placement presents students the opportunity to take part in an internship with a local music or arts organisation while the Project options allow students to pursue an independent course of research or practical work in a chosen field of musical study.

This programme will support you to develop your performance skills in your own current, chosen style(s) of music, while offering you the opportunity to explore and play a wide range of global musics. You will also develop your scholarly and theoretical knowledge of music. In order to offer new insights into the world of music and enhance your creative potential, you will be introduced to a wide range of performance practices and scholarly traditions. You will also study a number of vocational modules that will support you in your development of a fulfilling career.  

Restricted course. Music Performance Studies are a central part of the course. In year 3 and 4 you specialise in one of Performance Studies, Music in the Community, Pedagogic [Music Teaching] Studies, Music Technology, Music Therapy, it is equally possible to specialise in Applied Musicianship Skills and/or Music History.

TUS Athlone Campus exclusively offers an industry focused program that features Sound Engineering, Instrument Technology, Imaging and Professional Development to create the unique Bachelor of Science in Music and Sound Engineering, Level 7 (MASE). You will be involved in a wide range of industry specific assignments and practical work which encompasses all aspects of sound engineering, instrument craft & design and other creative studies that are all necessities for the creative industry

This course allows students to develop a broad range of knowledge and skills in audio and music technology, sound engineering and production and musicianship. Students will gain hands-on experience in studio work (audio tracking, audio mixing), composition with technology and radio production in our high-spec studios and multimedia editing suites. A series of events throughout the academic year will allow students to gain experience in studio production, live sound, composition with technology, radio programme production and musicianship whilst developing the necessary skills required to navigate the technical music and sound industry. As part of the course, students will be developing competence in industry software such as AVID Pro Tools, Reason, Adobe Audition, Sibelius, Ableton and other software.
