Nursing Studies is a one-year course for students wishing to train as Nurses both here in Ireland and in the UK. On completion of this course students can apply to Nursing Degree courses through the QQI entry system. It provides a solid foundation in Nursing theory and practice and allows students to accurately assess their suitability for a career in nursing. Applications are also invited from mature students wishing to pursue a career in nursing.

This course provides essential elements of knowledge, competence and skill for academic progression or employment within the healthcare setting. The course provides the foundation skills and entry requirements to Degree Progammes in Ireland and the UK. The course encourages an appreciation of the work involved in caring for all age groups, and emphasises the importance of interpersonal communication.

You will be introduced to subjects/topics commonly studied in the first year of the nursing degree programme. Learn about the skills and knowledge of the nursing profession with an emphasis on respect, dignity, empathy and confidentiality.

This intensive one-year program serves as a dual-purpose gateway for students aspiring to enter the nursing profession or work as Healthcare Assistants. The curriculum is led by clinical nurse practitioners, ensuring that nursing theory and practice are grounded in real-world expertise. Students train in a specialized nursing suite—modeled after a hospital room in St. James’s Hospital—using industry-standard equipment such as manual and ceiling hoists, hospital beds, and wheelchairs. 

A Nursing Studies QQI Level 5 course serves as a foundation step towards pursuing a career in nursing. It provides students with essential knowledge, skills and competencies needed to enter nursing education programs such as Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).

For students considering a career in nursing but unsure about committing to a full nursing degree program, a nursing studies course offers an opportunity to explore the profession.

The course includes a variety of classroom-based subjects, clinical practical skills, mandatory work placement and independent study. Assessments and assignments are continuous throughout the year. Academic learning consists of a combination of onsite and self-directed learning.

The purpose of the Nursing Studies - Maternity Care course is to provide students with a clear understanding of the academic requirements, personal qualities and charac­teristics necessary for a successful career in midwifery. The focus of the Nursing Studies - Maternity Care course is to prepare students for progression to Midwifery or Nursing Degree Programmes. Students will gain the skills to work under supervision in a variety of healthcare settings. The course combines a wide range of modules designed to give students an overview of topics required for midwifery and nursing, with a work placement element, which students arrange in a healthcare setting of their choice. Students are provided with a unique insight into careers in midwifery, nursing and caring professions. The course in Nursing Studies - Maternity Care also prepares students for academic studies, interviews and career progression.

The overall aim of the programme is to provide the learner with the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, skill and competence to work under supervision in a variety of healthcare settings and / or to progress to further or higher education and training.

This one-year full-time course combines academic and practical learning to enable you to acquire the essential knowledge, skills and competence to work in any healthcare setting as a HCA and to progress successfully to higher education to any branch of nursing.

Emphasis on work experience in clini-cal settings will help you decide on the direction you wish to take in your nursing career, and you will be supported by our qualified registered nursing teachers and careers counsellors.

This course is an introduction to Nursing and will benefit anyone wishing to enter the Healthcare profession using a QQI qualification. It is recognised nationally by Universities and Institutes of Technology in Ireland and in the UK. It provides a learning environment, in which learners are encouraged, assisted and ultimately required to take responsibility for their own learning. Essential skills in nursing care are taught by our qualified staff in our fully equipped ward.

Students must complete work experience in a Nursing/Care facility. Prior to engaging in practical Work Experience, students will complete both People Moving & Handling and PHECC First Aid Responder (FAR) Courses. Successful students will be awarded a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Nursing Studies – 5M4349.
