Common Semester 1: The common semester 1 programme includes modules in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, and Computing so that students will have completed an introduction to general science by the end of semester 1. Non-destructive testing is a specialisation of the course, this is the science of testing materials and systems without dismantling or damage, utilising X-rays, ultrasound, scanning electron microscopes, etc.

There is a high emphasis on practical work and projects - the student completes a number of projects over the course of the programme, and these can range from building electronic guitars, to making heart monitors, to finding new ways to use electron microscopy.
