The aim of this exciting new degree is to provide a multidisciplinary undergraduate education by developing specific expertise and comprehensive training in the key areas relevant to the emerging Internet of Things: mobile app development, connected device programming and software development/engineering.

The BSc in Software Development is a three- year Level 7 degree programme designed to provide students with the theoretical and practical skills necessary to gain employment in the software development industry. More specifically, the programme will provide students with relevant skills and knowledge in the area of modern software development focusing on languages, techniques, tools and methodologies and their application to real world problems.

This programme gives you the skills and knowledge you need to design and build applications that people use every day, for the desktop computer, for the web and for mobile devices (such as smart phones and tablets). This course provides a solid foundation in software development for web and mobile systems, and how to test and implement it into group projects. In Software Development, Year 4 concentrates on state-of-the-art, high-level software development topics such as: secure app development, data science, distributed systems and an extensive project.

This one-year, QQI Level 5 course is suited to people who are creative, analytical and logical and who are interested in computers and like solving real life problems. It equips the learner with the vocational skills and knowledge to train for a career in Software/App/Games Development/Programming and Testing. It gives learners the chance to design and code software apps, develop websites and database systems. Learners also enhance communication, leadership and interpersonal skills in the key group project based on agile development methodologies that are widely used in industry.

This course is designed to give the student a firm foundation in the skills required to develop software. Software development involves writing and testing computer programs to meet a customer's needs. Students are introduced to the basics of programming using the Java programming language. Once the basic principles of programming are understood, students move on to more advanced concepts using object-oriented programming languages.

There are 35 programme modules in this programme. Upon successful completion of a minimum of 8 programme modules the learner may achieve the required 120 credits for a level 5 QQI major award. There are many employment options after this course in the IT industry ranging from working in the area of Web Design creation to programming in the larger IT companies.

With the mix of skills this course provides, students will be ideally positioned to secure employment in either Open Source or .NET technology jobs as a: Software Engineer, Software Developer, Software Engineering/Modelling, Web Designer/Developer, Database Developer/Administrator, Test Engineer, Games and Mobile App Developer.
