This programme aims to provide the academic knowledge and practical skills needed for a foundational computing qualification with specialisation in the area of software development.

The programme focuses on theoretical knowledge and practical skills in core areas such software development, database technology, computer networking, operating systems, computer security and web technologies while also offering applied skills in contemporary topics such as processing big data, cloud platform development and problem solving and algorithms.

This course is aimed at anyone interested in gaining a comprehensive understanding of both the technical aspects of computer systems and networks as well as the skills needed for software development. It’s ideal for individuals aiming to work in fields like IT infrastructure, network management, or UI software development, as it combines the essentials of both areas into one cohesive curriculum.

Computing is the study of how computers and computer systems work and how they are constructed and programmed. As computing increasingly impacts on every aspect of our lives, it is also becoming a more evolved and complex area.

While computing may be of general interest to students, it’s often difficult to know which area of specialisation will be of most interest. This course has been designed to give students the broadest possible choice before choosing a specialisation.

Our Bachelor of Science in Computing provides you with a range of both theoretical and practical skills to advance in the computer industry. The ethos of this three-year course is to provide you with a strong core set of competencies in general computing - the kind of skills that are typically required across all aspects of the industry.  

This degree includes lots of time spent in computer labs creating programs and solving problems. The aim is to teach students how to use industry standard tools and techniques and then explain the concepts behind them. Creativity, problem solving, persistence and critical thinking are key skills which are developed during the degree. New high-tech computer teaching labs will open at ATU Sligo in 2023 and give students access to the latest advancements in technology.

The BSc in Computing is a three year programme where students begin in this shared first year alongside all other computing students across our programmes. The aim is to teach students how to use industry standard tools and techniques and then explain the concepts behind them. Creativity, problem solving, persistence and critical thinking are key skills which are developed during the course. At the end of Year 1, we counsel students on their next step, offering the following programmes to join: Computing, Software Development, and Games Development.

After Year 3, students may choose to continue their study in that computer programme to acquire a Level 8 honours degree (all but Games Development offer a Level 8 degree).

Data Science, also known as Big Data Analytics is the process of examining large amounts of data of a variety of types (big data) to uncover hidden patterns, unknown correlations and other useful information. Such information can provide competitive advantages over rival organizations and result in business benefits, such as more effective marketing and increased revenue. Data Science has in turn been the big enabler for the expansion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a truly mass-market technology. AI relies on the patterns found in data to make decisions.  

This programme of study fosters the development of creative thinking, and the development of interpersonal and project management skills and competencies required to work in the technology sector. You will develop skills in a variety of software tool-kits and applications through hands-on practical development work, and the production of rich media and web application content for a wide range of platforms. The programme places a significant emphasis on practical skills and you will work individually and in groups on a variety of projects. 

The overall aim of this programme is to provide its learners with the necessary theoretical and practical skills, knowledge and competence, to gain a comprehensive, specialised and in-depth, understanding of the area in Information Technology. 

During this course, you’ll learn coding and programming, and get to grips with databases, operating systems and networks. But you’ll also study innovation and entrepreneurship, project management and presentation skills. In your last year, you can even develop your own app, and build both a prototype and a rock-solid business plan.

This field covers a range of industries, including games development, application development, multimedia entertainment, simulation and virtual reality creation, animation, and filmmaking.

This course provides a solid foundation in software development for web and mobile systems, and how to test and implement it into group projects. Critical thinking and communication skills are taught to provide students with the core soft skills required to work as part of a modern software engineering team. Students will specialise in the design, development, testing and evaluation of software systems with particular emphasis on the application of agile process development.

How do we interact with computers? How is computing evolving? Software Development is about solving problems, designing new applications and developing your own personal skills for communication, leadership and management.

The course places a major emphasis on the development of practical programming language skills, problem solving and the application of computer science theory to real-world problems. In addition to becoming proficient in programming languages such as Java and C#, students will learn how to design, create and test software solutions for a world where mobility, connectivity, heterogeneity and Big Data are rapidly becoming part of everyday life. 

This exciting Level 8 Bachelors Degree teaches students about the latest technological developments, and enables them to gain practical work experience, and specialise in, one of four emerging areas.

This 4-year Honours degree programme provides students with a thorough understanding of the key principles of computer science.

Students will have the opportunity to work on software development projects, which have a strong industry focus. The projects will help support the theoretical content taught in class. In Year 3, you’ll undertake a 6-month work placement in the computing industry. In Year 4, you will choose a speciality: Cloud Computing, Network Management, Games Development or Software Development.

This Bachelors Degree teaches students about the latest technological developments in the IT industry and presents them with the opportunity to pursue a career in IT or progress onto a higher award in computing.

The course offers a broadly-based education in computing science that will equip you with the necessary skills to apply best practice to the development of a wide range of computing systems in organisations.

You will also be able to select modules which align with state-of-the-art research or showcase current advances in computing such as Data Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, Pervasive Computing, Mobile Development, Big Data and Computer Vision.

This degree integrates Software Design and Development skills, with the Computing Systems on which applications are deployed, and an understanding of the DevOps tools and processes to manage their delivery. Students have a strong interest in software and enjoy the more technically focused and systems-driven aspects of Computing to aim to streamline their software development processes, improve team collaboration, and enhance the overall efficiency and quality of their software delivery.
